Arliss Jean Freeman, daughter of Reuben and Helen (Lange) Freeman, was born on July 11, 1933, in Fergus Falls, MN. She and her three siblings grew up in a log house 3 miles west of Deer Creek. She and her family were members of Salem Evangelical Church and Arliss attended country school at Spruce Lawn, District 101, Ottertail County, before graduating from high school in Deer Creek. From there she went on to graduate from Moorhead State Teachers College with a degree in Education.

Arliss began her lifelong dream of teaching in Breckenridge, MN where she taught kindergarten for 2 years before moving to Alexandria where she taught another 4 years. On June 19, 1960, she was united in marriage to Adolph Jensen Hauge at Salem Evangelical Church in Deer Creek. The two made their home on the Hauge family farm along the Chippewa River near Terrace. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Carol Ann and Mary Lynn. Arliss continued her teaching career at the Brooten Elementary School, where she taught for 28 years before her retirement.

Arliss was a member of the Terrace Ladies Aid, the Glenwood Village Auxiliary, and involved with various activities at the Terrace Mill. She was an avid sports fan for all Minnesota teams and enjoyed reading, puzzles, and traveling with her family.

Arliss will be remembered as a remarkable teacher, an eternal optimist, and someone who treasured the richness of her family. She taught her daughters and grandchildren to have a positive attitude when facing life’s challenges. Despite numerous medical problems, she never lost faith that things would all work out.
