Catherine Walerius, age 91 of Sartell, formerly of Glenwood, died Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at the Country Manor Nursing Home in Sartell.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 25th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood.  Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with parish prayers at 7:00 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.  Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.  Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood.  Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Catherine Margaret Schwarz, daughter of Joseph and Alexia (Schwendinger) Schwarz, was born on April 11, 1926, in Wabasso, Minnesota. She grew up in Wabasso and attended school there. On September 19, 1944, Catherine was united in marriage to Norbert James Walerius at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wabasso. For many years the two made their home in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and it was there that they raised their seven children.

Catherine worked at Red Owl grocery store, Control Data, the Redwood Falls Golf Course and the VFW in Redwood Falls before moving to Glenwood in 1977, where she was employed at the Minnewaska House. She enjoyed baking and was known for her caramel rolls. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, playing cards and gardening. Catherine had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humor. 

Catherine passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at Country Manor in Sartell, MN, at the age of 91. Her family was everything to her and they will miss her very much.

She is survived by her children, Mary Nordgren of Sartell, Carol (Butch) Rice of Verndale, Jan (Dan) Shaffer of Lake Forest Park, WA, daughter-in-law, Jill Walerius of Glenwood, Jo (Larry) Brecht of Glenwood, Jeff (Colleen) Walerius of Big Lake, Meg (John) Smyrski of Elizabethtown, KY; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Don) Schiller; two brothers, William (Mary) Schwarz and Frank (Margaret) Schwarz; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Alexia Schwarz; her husband, Norbert in 1984; a son, James Walerius in 2014; and two brothers, Tom and Jerry Schwarz.
