Emelie L. Sorenson, age 78 of Glenwood, died Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 4th at 2:00 p.m. at West Lake Johanna Lutheran Church in rural Brooten with Pastor Stephen Bovendam officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 3rd from 5-7 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten.
Emelie Louise Sorenson was born April 2, 1939 at home in Rolling Forks Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Walter and Viola (Iverson) Kittelson. She grew up on a farm in Pope County and graduated from Glenwood High School.
On December 1, 1956, Emelie was united in marriage to Gerald “Jerry” Sorenson. They made their home in Minneapolis until 1962, when the couple bought Emelie’s home farm, where they operated a dairy farm and raised their 5 children. Emelie and Jerry shared 56 years of marriage before Jerry passed away August 5, 2013. Emelie worked at Bonanza Valley State Bank for 25 years. She then started working for her daughter at the Gingerbread House Café in 1997. She continued to work there until she retired in 2013.
Emelie was a woman of faith and a very active member of West Lake Johanna Church, holding various offices from Sunday school teacher to Church treasurer. She was also a member of the American Legion Post Auxiliary in Brooten. Her family and friends will fondly remember her sense of humor and infectious laugh. She loved visiting with family and friends, playing rook, and crossword puzzles. Emilie always opened her home to those who needed a place to stay, whether it be foster children or friends. She passed away March 28, 2018 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
Emelie is survived by her children: Randall Sorenson of Glenwood, Patricia (Barry) Bouwman of Glenwood, Robert (Virginia) Sorenson of Brooten, Ryan (Denise) Sorenson of Sauk Center, and Rick (Cara) Sorenson of Big Lake; grandchildren: Melanie, Andrew, Megan, Rachel, Bethanie, Rebecca, Matthew, Cassandra, Nicole, Raeann, Jared, Payton, Santos, McKayla, Preston, Derrick and Eleanor; numerous foster grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Chase and Kylee; siblings: Paul (Jani) Kittelson of Benson, Larry (Linda) Kittelson of Starbuck, David Kittelson of Texas, Ruth (Warren) Mitchell of Brooten and Kathleen (Don) Yates of Crofton, MD; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Gerald.
