Dick was born to Mary J. (Graves) Kaus and Edmund F. Kaus on August 24, 1935, in Minneapolis, MN. Dick spent his childhood in Minneapolis, Whitehall, Montana, and Springfield, Oregon, where he graduated from high school. He then attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., graduating in 1957 with a degree in Business and Speech as well as a fiancée, Carol Ann Udseth (Augustana ’56). On December 28, 1957 Dick married Carol, the love of his life. For the next 59 years they lived in Glenwood, MN where they raised three daughters and were active in the community.

Dick was the manager of Ruhr American (a division of Herter’s), a sporting goods store and manufacturing plant for clay targets for over two decades. After the closing of Herter’s, he became a successful businessman and entrepreneur. He was passionate about his work and held leadership positions at Glenwood Manufacturing and American Overhead Conveyor. After retirement, his passion continued and led him to establish, own, and operate Rich Mar Sports and Instant Shade. Dick served as Chairman of the School Board for nearly 20 years, was active in Jaycees, Lions Club, Glenwood Development Commission, and on the Glenwood Lutheran Church Council. He was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching college and professional sports, especially Minnesota teams. He also enjoyed the many lifelong friendships he and Carol developed in Glenwood. In addition, they spent many happy winters in Arizona. Over the years, Dick enjoyed playing bridge, fishing, hunting, camping, golf, tennis, and activities with or watching his grandchildren. He loved living by Lake Minnewaska and sharing the sunsets with Carol.

Dick is survived by his wife of 59 years Carol A. Kaus, daughters: Karlyn Kaus Wegmann of Minneapolis, Karen (Kaus) Mariska of Eden Prairie, and KayLynn (Kaus) Wallsmith of Buffalo, MN; eight grandchildren Matthew Wegmann, Nathan Wegmann, Cecily Wegmann, Benjamin Jacobson, Samantha (Jacobson) Reilly, Julia Jacobson, Alexander Wallsmith and Carol Ann Wallsmith. He is also survived by his three siblings Marlene (Stan) Grout of Medford, OR, Shirlee Swanberg of Glenwood, MN, and Charles Kaus of Rapid City, SD, along with four nieces, four nephews, other relatives and countless friends.

Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or Grace Hospice (www.GraceCaring.org). The family is extremely grateful to the staff at The Waters of Edina for the kind and very loving attention they gave Dick during his five months in their care.
