Dennis M. Flaata

Dennis Flaata, age 79 of Alexandria, died Monday, February 5, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on February 17th at Glenwood Lutheran Church in Glenwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. 

Dennis Marvin Flaata the son of Oscar and Adella (Knutson) Flaata was born March 25, 1938 in Sacred Heart, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near Sacred Heart where he attended school. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1956. Dennis then furthered his education at the Humboldt Institution in Minneapolis and graduated with a degree in transportation.

Dennis was employed for Midland co-op in Fridley for 23 years, WMW products in Osseo for 6 years, and Harvest State Cooperative in St. Paul for 6 years.

On November 30, 1957, Dennis was united in marriage to Marcene Lecy at 1st Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belview, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Fridley and Andover before retiring to their home that Dennis helped built on Lake Amelia in rural Villard and eventually Alexandria. For the last 21 winters, Dennis and Marcene wintered in Mission, Texas. This marriage was blessed with five children and Dennis and Marcene shared 60 years of marriage.

Dennis belonged to the Fridley Snowmobile Club and was a snowmobiling safety instructor.  He loved golfing and was an active member of the Minnewaska Golf Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, snowmobiling, woodworking, camping and deer hunting. He took pride in the fact that he was able to deer hunt for 60 years. Dennis will be remembered as a “Mr. Fix-it” who was able to fix anything. 

He is survived by his wife, Marcene of Alexandria; children: Melinda (Mark) Hanson of New Richmond, WI, Jeff (Donna) Flaata of Maple Grove, MN, Dale (Kim) Flaata of Cottage Grove, MN and Darla (Dan) Spencer of Anoka, MN; 11 grandchildren: Sally (Oscar) Theiler, Dwight Hanson, Marie Hanson, Calvin (special friend, Laura Alt) Hanson, Jennifer (Kevin) Collins, Brandon (Jesse) Flaata, Jared (Ali) Flaata, Cory (special friend, Randi Schaust) Flaata, Brooke Flaata, Megan Spencer and Nathan Spencer; great-grandchildren: Felix Theiler, Liam Flaata, Emerson Collins and Quinn Collins; brothers: Orlan (Kathlene) Flaata of Hutchinson, Merlyn (Carol) Flaata of Plymouth, MN, LeRoy (Jan) Flaata of Alexandria and Arden (Margie) Flaata of Sacred Heart, MN; sisters-in-law, Jan Flaata of Glendale, AZ, Carol Flaata of Willmar, MN and Jackie Doty of Mission, TX; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Nancy Flaata; and brothers, Owen and Floyd Flaata.
