Gloria Imogene (Kirkwold) Schroeder was born June 27, 1929, to Alma (Roll) Kirkwold and Clayton Kirkwold in a stucco house, on the west side of Lake Pelican, Glenwood, MN. When Gloria was just a few weeks shy of her 4th birthday, the family welcomed their second daughter, June. Gloria attended country school until the 5th grade, when she transferred to public school in Glenwood. She graduated with the Glenwood High School Class of 1947. During her junior year of high school she was a member of the Jean Martin Honor Society. After high school, she got a job with the Glenwood Herald Newspaper.

On November 15, 1947, Gloria married Robert Schroeder at Glenwood Lutheran Church, in a double wedding with her best friend, Irene Anderson. Gloria and Robert first made their home on his family farm near Grove Lake, where they intended to farm. However, Robert had a change of heart and instead took a construction job with a company in the Twin Cities. Robert’s job took the couple all over the State and for several years they lived in a travel trailer, moving from one worksite to the next. During this time they started a family. Their daughter Linda was born in 1948 and their son Loren in 1951. When it was time for Linda to go to kindergarten, the couple purchased Gloria’s grandparents’ home in Long Beach by Lake Minnewaska, eventually building a new home on the site. In 1953, Robert went into business with George Sutton; forming a company they named ACME, offering general concrete contractor services. Seven years later, Gloria and Robert formed Robert R. Schroeder Construction, Inc., where they both worked. Gloria retired in 1983 and Robert semi-retired in 1985, when they began spending winters in Sun City West, Arizona, which they enjoyed for several years.

Gloria was involved with the Jaycees and Glenwood Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her gardens, where she grew beautiful irises. She and Robert were featured in Life magazine in 1962, spear fishing on Lake Minnewaska. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends and going on card retreats with them. She loved to travel and visited many countries.

Gloria is survived by her children, Linda (Ed) Sievert of Sauk Centre, and Loren (Kathy) Schroeder of Glenwood; six grandchildren, Kris Sievert, Janel Schroeder, Eddy Sievert, Karen (Todd) O’Neill, Carol Hertel, and David (Megan) Schroeder; 12 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Josh, Kyra, Preston, Conor, Megan, Cody, Drew, Katelyn, Colton, Zach and Will; a sister-in-law, Marion Schroeder of Glenwood; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton and Alma Kirkwold Miller; her husband, Robert; and her sister, June Iverson.

Memorials in memory of Gloria may be directed to: Glenwood Village Care Center, 719 2nd Street SE, Glenwood, MN 56334 or Glacial Ridge Hospice, 10 Fourth Ave SE, Glenwood, MN 56334.
