Henry Lloyd DeRoo Obituary

Henry “Lloyd” DeRoo, age 83 of Brooten, died Saturday, May 26, 2018 on vacation in Wahkon, Minnesota. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 31st at the Brooten Community Church with Pastor Rick Krasky officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 5-7 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in the church cemetery, Bethany Cemetery in Brooten. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten. 

Henry Lloyd DeRoo, the son of Henry and Carrie (Vande Griend) DeRoo was born January 8, 1935 in Hospers, Iowa. Lloyd grew up on a farm near Hull Iowa and attended school in Beaver Creek and Western Christian High School.

On August 26, 1955, Lloyd was united in marriage to Dorothy Doorneweerd in Hills, Minnesota. To this union nine children were born. The couple made their home in Luverne, MN until 1958 when they moved to a farm near Brooten. Lloyd farmed for several years and drove truck for various local companies. In 1968, he went into a partnership and formed Brooten Truck Body which Lloyd and his partner operated until 1995. Lloyd finished his working career at Crow River Industries until his retirement in 2005.

Lloyd was a member of the Brooten Fire Department for 27 years. He was one of the founding members of the Brooten ambulance and served in that capacity for 15 years. He was also an active member of the Brooten Community Church. He enjoyed gardening and taking care of his lawn and took great pride in the finished appearance. Lloyd’s true loves were Dorothy, his family and fishing. He especially loved when he could combine those and looked forward to his fishing trips with his family every year.  He enjoyed having a big family and was proud of each and every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a caring and loving husband, father and grandfather

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy DeRoo of Brooten; children: Kevin (Linda) DeRoo of Maple Grove, Brenda (Ken) Arens of Sauk Centre, Michele (Dale) Salge of Wadena, Donavon (Judy) DeRoo of Anoka, Michael (Lori) DeRoo of St. Michael, Diane (Jaime) DeRoo of Portland, OR, Brian (Laura) DeRoo of Rockford, Aaron (Sara) DeRoo of Belgrade and Andrea (Eric) Dingmann of Brooten; 26 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings: Joan DeJongh of Luverne, Carmen (Don) VanZee of Sunburg, Allen DeRoo of Worthington, Sharon Melin of Willmar and Connie (Herman) TeBrake of Brooten; sister-in-law, Wilma DeRoo of Rock Rapids, IA; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wilmer and Marvin DeRoo; and brothers-in-law, Preston DeJongh and Donavan Melin.
