Joyce Carlene Volkmann, the daughter of Leonard and Agnes (Johnson) Johnson, was born on April 30, 1938 in Barrett, MN where she grew up on the family farm. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and graduated from Barrett High School. Joyce moved to Alexandria, MN where she met Clifford Volkmann on a blind date in December of 1957. They were united in holy matrimony on March 5, 1960 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Barrett. Shortly after, they moved to St. Paul, MN and started their family. In 1965, they moved to Barrett, MN where they farmed until 1967. They moved once again and took over the Volkmann family farm north of Villard, MN. There they made their home and raised their 5 children.

Joyce was a woman of many talents. Along with farming, Joyce worked as a bank teller, teacher’s aide and secretary at the Villard Public School, and she started her own cleaning business. After Clifford and Joyce retired from farming, they were caretakers for Irwin Jacobs in Wayzata, MN. In 2001, they returned to Glenwood where Joyce worked in the medical records department at Glacial Ridge Heath System until her retirement in 2013. She continued to volunteer at the hospital, where she made many friends. Cliff and Joyce are members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Villard where their children were baptized and confirmed. Joyce was very active in the church and held many positions. She served as the church organist, a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the altar guild, choir, hand bell choir, and Ladies Aid. Joyce was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary and Northside Birthday Club. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, cooking, crafts, bird watching, and music.

Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She enjoyed attending all their activities and events, celebrating each and every birthday with her famous angel food cake, and making lefse with the family. She will be remembered for her sweet, caring nature – always greeting everyone with her beautiful smile. We will miss her infectious laughter and the way she touched the lives of those around her. Joyce passed away Monday, August 20, 2018 at home surrounded by her family.
