Marilyn Yackel Obituary

Marilyn Yackel, age 82, of Glenwood, MN died Saturday, October 5, 2019, at home surrounded by her family and under the care of Glacial Ridge Hospice. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Glenwood Lutheran Church at 11 A.M. on Friday, October 11th, with Rev. Krista Lee officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 – 7 P.M. at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home and will resume on Friday at the church, one hour prior to the service. Inurnment at Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery will follow the service. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Marilyn Jeanette Yackel, the daughter of Daniel and Jeanette (Olson) Abel was born February 12, 1937 in Hoffman, Minnesota. She grew up in Hoffman where she went to school and graduated from Hoffman High School in 1955. On October 27, 1956 Marilyn was united in marriage to Charles “Jim” Yackel at Zion Lutheran Church in Hoffman. They made their home in Elbow Lake and Hoffmann before settling in Glenwood. Marilyn and Jim were blessed with two children, Corey and Karin.

Marilyn was a homemaker and stay at home mom until 1977, when she started as a nursing assistant at the Starbuck Hospital. In 1984, she graduated from Alexandria Technical College as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Soon after she graduated Marilyn started her career at Glacial Ridge Health System for 24 years, retiring in 2008. After fully retiring she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of Glenwood Lutheran Church, where she was involved in the alter guild, WELCA, do days quilting, baking bread for the meatball dinner and helping with funeral lunches. She enjoyed baking, quilting, puzzles, golfing, knitting, crocheting and getting together with family and friends. Marilyn will be remembered as a loving mom, grandma, great grandma and friend who would do anything to help her family and friends. She passed away peacefully October 5, 2019 at home surrounded by her family and under the care of Glacial Ridge Hospice.

Marilyn is survived by her son, Corey (Deb) Yackel of Starbuck, MN; daughter, Karin Yackel of Glenwood; grandchildren: Brandon Yackel, Faline Yackel, Collin (Adriana) Yackel, Riley Berkey; great grandchildren: Blake Schumacher, Maya and Thea Yackel; step-grandchildren: Stacy (Graham) Holtberg and Stephanie (David) Dodds; step-great-grandchildren: Sawyer and Owen Holtberg, Madisen, Morgen and Rylie Dodds; brothers, Gene Abel of Starbuck, Jerry (Judy) Abel of Diamond Bar, CA, Dennis (Mary) Abel of St. Paul, MN, and Allen (Carolyn) Abel of Duluth; sisters: Mary Johnsrud of Ashby and Joyce (Dick) Strunk of Bellavista, AR; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles “Jim” Yackel in 2016; grandson, Anthony Berkey; brothers, Delano and Carroll Abel; nieces, Sheri Leegard and Laura Wells, nephew, Mark Strunk and brother-in-law, Dick Johnsrud.
