Marlys Mithun, age 87 of Glenwood, died Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 31^st at Glenwood Lutheran Church with Rev. Randy Chrissis officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood. 

Marlys Jane Alsaker, daughter of John and Myrtle (Rierson) Alsaker, was born on April 9, 1930, in Gilchrist Township, Minnesota. She grew up in Gilchrist Township and attended school there. She and her family were members of West Lake Johanna Church, where she was baptized in infancy and confirmed on September 24, 1944. Marlys was united in marriage to Ellert Orlando Mithun on September 13, 1947 until his passing on June 8, 2004. Their marriage was blessed with six children.

Marlys and Ellert started their married life in Glenwood where Ellert drove gravel truck. They later moved to Oregon where he worked on the railroad for two years before moving back to Minneapolis where Marlys worked for Honeywell and Tiffany Labeling. In 1969, they returned to Glenwood to farm and raise livestock. In addition to farming, the pair also worked as relay drivers for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Marlys worked as a rural mail carrier in Glenwood until her retirement.

Marlys loved to spend time with family and playing cards with relatives. Prior to Ellert’s death the two enjoyed traveling and going to barn dances. She also enjoyed seeking out garage sales and was a supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. She was a longtime member of Glenwood Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as Chaplain.

Marlys passed away unexpectedly at the age of 87 years on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Glacial Ridge Hospital. She was very much loved and will be greatly missed.

Marlys is survived by five of her children, Ervin (Melea) of Albany, Oregon, Marlene (Steve) Braun of Coon Rapids, Helen (Tim) Rannow of Coon Rapids, Gary (Barbara) of West St. Paul, and Nancy (David) Armstrong of Glenwood; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Donald Alsaker of Glenwood; two sisters, Inez Stoneburg of Glenwood and Donna Mithun of Glenwood; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ellert in 2004; a daughter, Maisie Mithun; a sister, Bernice Mix; two grandsons, Robert Jr. and Jon Schumann; a granddaughter, Patricia Diane Schumann; and a great-grandson, Truston.
