Muriel J. Thorp, age 95 of Glenwood, died Friday, June 08, 2018 at the Glenwood Retirement Village. A memorial service celebrating her life will be on Monday, June 18, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Muriel J. Thorp, the daughter of Carl and Elsie (Plack) Irgens was born June 13, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, where she was also active in the choir and taught Sunday school. On April 12, 1944, Muriel was united in marriage to Carl Thorp. The couple made their home in Minneapolis and were blessed with six children. They shared 73 year of marriage before Carl passed away October 14, 2017
Muriel joined the Minnehaha Chapter #37 of the Eastern Star in 1943; where she served as Worthy Matron in 1974. In 2001, when she moved to Glenwood, she joined the Minnewaska Chapter #129 of the Eastern Star. Along with being active in the Eastern Star for over 75 years, Muriel was Guardian of Jobs Daughters and a Den Mother for 9 years. She enjoyed crafting, playing cards, games and was a farkle champion! Muriel especially loved traveling with her husband in their R.V. and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered as a wonderfully patient and caring mother and homemaker. Muriel passed away June 8, 2018; her last days were spent surrounded by her family and the caring staff at the Glenwood Retirement Village. Muriel had pre-planned her service and when writing her obituary she included that she “enjoyed life a lot”.
She is survived by her children: Dennis (Barb) Thorp of Oklahoma, Terry Thorp of Minnetonka, Donald (Bonnie) Thorp of San Diego, CA, Marcia (Gary) Wold of Glenwood and Karen (Terry) Lund of Eagan; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Muriel is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Cathy Thorp; grandson, Michael Thorp; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Wilbur Goetz; and nieces, Carol and Susan Goetz.
