He and his family were members of Pilgrim Congregational Church in Benson and he attended school in Benson. On August 16, 1951, he enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard. Three years later, on August 7, 1954, Bill was united in marriage to Olga Lorine Olson at Bethany Lutheran Church in Morris.

Bill enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles, the outdoors, reading western stories, and sharing coffee with friends. He had the uncanny ability to repair things, for which he was called upon many times by his children. Those who knew and loved Bill will remember his woodworking skills, his love of the outdoors, his gift of gab, and his ability to wiggle his ears for his grandchildren.
