The daughter of Emmanuel Grant and Isabel Waldie Costner, she was born December 17, 1923, in Medford, Oklahoma. Her parents died when she was very young, and she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Amy and Frank Fuss. She grew up on farms near Medford and later near Pawnee, Oklahoma where she graduated from high school.

She attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, where she met and married John Carey Stone on May 24, 1942. After their marriage, they lived in Chicago and Elgin, Illinois before moving to Minneapolis and then Minnetonka. There, she was active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and the Wayzata Community Church.

Anita and John had four children, John R. (Mary) Stone of Glenwood, Minnesota; Sara S. (Scott) Johnson of New Ulm, Minnesota; Didi (Gene) Mack of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Keith C. (Joan Crewson) Stone of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The family moved to Alexandria in 1961, where John purchased the Park Region Echo newspaper. On March 1, 1962, John C. Stone died and Anita went to work at the newspaper eventually becoming its editor.

In 1968, she sold her interest in the newspaper and enrolled at Moorhead State University where she completed a bachelor's degree in mass communications and graduated with her oldest daughter, Sara.

After graduating, Anita took a position at Mankato State University where she worked at the University news bureau and printing operation. While at Mankato she took classes for an advanced degree.

After 17 years in Mankato, she retired and returned to Alexandria. She was a co-founder of the Douglas County Habitat for Humanity chapter and continued her life-long interest in landscaping and gardening. She was also a member of the Federation of Women's Clubs and an avid golfer.

In 2002, she moved to Glenwood Plaza where she lived until entering Glenwood Retirement Village in the fall of 2013. For much of her time at the plaza she maintained two of the gardens in Barsness Park, purchasing her own flowers and even her own lawn mower.
