Obituary

Arleigh Ellsworth Lund, 92, died Sunday afternoon, June 7, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital after a brief illness.  Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 12 th at Glenwood Lutheran Church.  Visitation will be from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.  Interment will be in the Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Arleigh was born on May 19, 1923 in Walden Township on a farm west of Starbuck. His parents were Henry and Minnie (Ronshaugen) Lund. Arleigh graduated from Glenwood High School in 1941, captaining the Laker basketball team that defeated Alexandria to claim the District 22 championship.

Arleigh started college at Luther in Decorah, Iowa the fall of 1941. Because he was the caregiver for his friend, Tony Engebretson that year, Tony's parents paid all his school expenses. When WWII started on December 7, 1941, the Luther students were told to finish the school year before enlisting.

After a hitchhiking trip to California with his life-long friend, Bill Churchill, Arleigh volunteered for service in the U.S. Army along with his classmate, Raymond Bentrud while Bill enlisted in the Navy. During the nineteen day Atlantic crossing to Europe, zig-zagging to avoid enemy submarines, he was proud to say he was one of the few soldiers who did not get seasick. This, of course, led to him assuming many shifts of top deck guard duty. Arleigh served in the 249 th Signal Corp in Italy, France, Germany, and some post-war occupation duty. Both of Arleigh's brothers also served overseas during the war, leaving their parents at home, praying for the family to be reunited. The return trip crossing took only three days and Arleigh was honorably discharged in November 1945. His buddy Ray Bentrud, as well as many others, did not return home.

With the war over, Arleigh continued his education at Luther College through the G.I. bill, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Business Administration.

Arleigh married Corinne Tideman on August 7, 1948. They treasured their 51 years together prior to Corinne's passing on May 7, 2000. During retirement, they enjoyed traveling for two months each winter, reconnecting with friends and family as they explored the country.

Arleigh worked with and eventually assumed the position of Pope County Auditor prior to starting his own business, Lund Accounting, in April 1961. In 1984, the business was sold to Jerry Wangsness and Arleigh continued to work for Jerry.  In "retirement", Arleigh worked every tax season through this year, appreciating the time he spent with his friends in the office as well as clients he had known for years.

Arleigh was an active member of Glenwood Lutheran Church, serving as an usher for years. He also played baseball on the Glenwood Town team in the 1940's and 50's. He then traded his baseball spikes for golf spikes and shot countless rounds at Minnewaska Golf Club with friends, especially on what Corinne termed "Holy Thursday". Arleigh was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as a County Commissioner in the mid 1980's. Fishing on Lake Minnewaska and an annual trip to Leech Lake, as well as duck and pheasant hunting were favorite pastimes.

Most important to Arleigh was his family. He is survived by his daughter, Pat (Dave) Lund-Moe of Hortonville, Wisconsin and his son, Tony Lund of Minnetonka; Grandchildren Cassy, Chris, and Josh, all of Wisconsin; and Great-grandsons Parker and Grayson. Arleigh is also survived by his brother-in-law Phillip (Vivian) Tideman of Wahkon and sister-in-law Aveleigh Tideman of St. Cloud; beloved nephews and nieces; extended family of Packer fans from Scandinavia, Wisconsin; and dear friends who he treasured and were so good to him.

Arleigh was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father-in-law, brothers and sisters-in-law LeRoy(Beverly and Ordell) and Torbin (Mary); brother-in-law Carl Tideman; sister-in-law, Peggy (Alban)Eger; his dear wife Corinne and grandson Zachary.  Arleigh had many good friends who preceded him in death. He was so grateful to children of those friends who still spent time with him, listening to stories that got better each time they were told.
