Arthur O.
Rosten
Apr 10, 1919 — Oct 5, 2015
Art Rosten, 96, of Glenwood, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 5, 2015.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12 at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct 11, from 3-6 at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home. There will also be visitation one hour before the service begins.
Arthur Oliver Rosten, the son of Ole and Alma (Lund) Rosten was born in the rural Glenwood area on April 10, 1919. Art attended a one room school house, District 33, until June 27, 1933.
On February 22, 1944, Art married the lovely and always entertaining, Glorianne Hoeper, also of the rural Glenwood area. They were married 67 years and lived the entire time in Glenwood.
In 1937, Art left the farm and began driving truck for Carl Williams, Harry Beale, and others before starting work for Charles Kettels, who at the time owned the city dray line, in 1948. Four years later, he purchased the dray line from Mr. Kettels and operated it as Rosten Dray for the next 16 years until selling it in June of 1968. In September, 1968, Art joined the Town-Country Gas Co., doing installation and delivery work. He retired in 1984.
Working long hours didn't allow for much free time, however, he belonged to the Glenwood Jaycees, the Glenwood Lutheran Church Usher's Club for over 50 years and helped construct the existing Glenwood Food Shelf.
Though Art was a quiet man, he enjoyed being a part of any conversation and enjoyed sharing stories of his early life on the farm and his passion for trucking. His family was his world and he sang their praises with every opportunity. He was the "poster child" for a good neighbor and asked for nothing in return. You could often times see him mowing lawns and plowing snow for neighbors and friends well into his 90's. His limited sight didn't stop him from being Mr. Fix-it and always said that," It might not look pretty, but it'll work." And it usually did. His hands became his eyes as his sight diminished and he would search for that fallen bolt or dropped screw while assembling the lawnmower. He never gave up when the job became difficult and hung in there till the end.
Art will be remembered as a patient and kind man who saw it as his duty to be a good husband, father and American. He liked simple things; a nice yard, Dairy Queen, company of others and old time music. His idea of relaxation was working in the garage, mowing the lawn and plowing snow. Art lived a long and full life and would be the first to admit that he missed nothing. His work ethic, kindness to others and love for family will be his legacy.
Art is survived by his children, Curtiss Rosten of Beaumont, CA, Angela Schlief (special friend, Raleigh Wold) of Glenwood, Stephanie (Jeff) Byrdziak of Champlin, Mn and Gregory (Barbara) Rosten of Audobon, MN., his sisters, Gladys (Lars) Nygard of Michigan, Betty (Vince) Scherber of Rogers, MN and brothers Don (Mary) Rosten of Glenwood, and Bob Rosten of Great Falls, Montana, 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Art was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Glorianne; one sister, Myrtice LeFevre, and two brothers, Billy and Jim Rosten.
