Bernice Carsten, age 98, of Glenwood, MN, died Friday, October 11, 2013, at Glenwood Village Care Center in Glenwood. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove Lake with Pastor Josh Heimbuck officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church in Grove Lake. Interment will be in the Grove Lake Cemetery. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Bernice "Barney" Carsten, the daughter of George and Gertrude (Forney) Jurgens was born on July 20, 1915, in Allison, Iowa. At the age of one, Barney and her family, moved to the Grove Lake area. She graduated from Glenwood High School in 1934.
On September 19, 1934, Barney was united in marriage to Theodore O. Carsten. This marriage was blessed with 4 children. Barney and Theodore were dairy farmers for 45 years. Barney was always kept busy. She was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove Lake. She cooked and drove bus for many years for the Grove Lake School. Barney enjoyed and was always kept busy cleaning and instead of retiring she cleaned houses and churches in the Glenwood area. The people she cleaned for kept her social life active.
Barney was a feisty lady. She loved Christmas, Holidays and playing cards. Barney made many memories card playing with friends, children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Tom (Marcy) Carsten of Oak Harbor, WA; daughters-in-law, June and Marion Carsten both of Glenwood; son-in-law, Joseph DesRocher of St. Cloud, MN; sister, Jeannette Rohloff of Buffalo, MN; 11 grandchildren, Craig, Keith, Renae, Todd, Cheryl, Theodore, Scott, Jaci, Lori, Lance and Lonny; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband Theodore Carsten; sons, Dietrich "Dick" and Ronald "Jack" Carsten; daughter, Mildred DesRocher; brothers, Clinton, Donald and Roger; and two sisters, Augusta and Pearl.
