Obituary

Carl M. Norwig, age 68, of Hastings, MN, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at his home surrounded by family.   Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 6th, at Historic Ft. Snelling Chapel, which is located at the intersection of Highways 5, 55 and 62 in Ft. Snelling.  Visitation will be Thursday evening at the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home in Hastings from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. and will resume on Friday at the Ft. Snelling Memorial Chapel from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M.  Interment following the service in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood. Carl Morris Norwig, son of Kjell and Helen (Bailey) Norwig, was born on September 24, 1945, in Warroad, MN.  He was the eldest son, and fourth child born into a family of ten children.  He grew up on the family farm near Warroad and attended school in Warroad.  In May of 1966, Carl entered the United States Army, serving two years active duty in Vietnam.  He was honorably discharged in 1968 and then served in the Army Reserve until 1972. On August 23, 1969, Carl was united in marriage to Joy Price at Two Harbors, MN.  Their marriage was blessed with 7 children.  Carl worked as heavy machine mechanic for Christian Brothers, building overhead power lines.  His job required the family to move often.  Over the years they lived in several cities including Two Harbors, Thief River Falls, Baudette, Billings, MT, St. Paul, the Philippines, and finally Hastings.  Carl and Joy later divorced but remained close over the years.  In recent years he suffered with various service-related ailments attributable to exposure to Agent Orange during his service in Vietnam.  Just over a year ago he was diagnosed with cancer and given only weeks or, at the most, a couple of months to live.  With determination and loving care from his family and former wife, he lived over a year.  Carl passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, June 1, 2014, having lived to the age of 68 years. In the 1990's Carl served as a Neighborhood Resource Officer.  He also coached his sons' teams in baseball and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a loving, giving, supportive family man and friend. Carl is survived by his former wife, Joy Norwig Lichtsinn of Hastings; seven children, James (Patty) of New Hampton, Michael (Cheryl) of Prescott, WI, Alice (Corey) Koehn of Oakdale, Adam of Hastings, Matthew (Anna) of Hastings, Joshua (Kira Musolf) of Little Canada and Sarah (Jeremy Evans) Norwig of Hastings; 19 grandchildren; 4 great-granddaughters and a great-grandson; nine siblings, Joan (Robert Stroble) Melgaard of Thief River Falls,  Carolyn (Spencer) Johnston of Salol, Esther (James) Wilhelm of Otis, OR, Joyce (Dennis) Smith of Bismarck, ND, E. Robert (Kathy) Fargo, ND, Richard (Teresa) of Moorhead, Shelly (Anthony) Smith of Fargo, ND, Anders (Sue) of Linwood and Jeff, of Linwood; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kjell and Helen Norwig and a niece, Hannah Norwig. Blessed be his memory
