Charles was born in Wayzata, MN, on June 24, l926. He was adopted by Charles and Mable Lindholm and officially became Charles Fredrick Lindholm, Jr. soon after birth. Adopted brother, John (Jack), joined the family several years later. Mr. Lindholm managed a summer estate on Lake Minnetonka. Following Mr. Lindholm's death in l933, Mrs. Lindholm found it necessary to give up her sons. The boys went to live with the Wheelers near Henning, MN. As they were unable to keep both boys, Charles went to live at several locations before he was welcomed by Marion and Mable Bullock in Battle Lake, MN. Having no children of their own they joyfully received Charles as their own.
While living with the Bullocks he was baptized and personally changed his middle name to Robert. His new family began calling him "Bobby." Tragically, before his adoption was finalized, his new dad, Marion, was killed in a farming accident in l935. His mother, Mable, was able to complete the adoption process and Bobby officially became a Bullock. After a few short years, tragedy struck again taking the life of his mother, who died of pneumonia following surgery in l939. Mable's mother, Minnie, took Bobby in, promising her daughter that he would never be given away again. Shortly after this event, Minnie West lost her husband, Nathan, also to a farming accident.
Charles stayed with Grandma West at the home of her son, Gilbert West, in Fergus Falls, MN, until his graduation from high school in l944. Business always seemed to come naturally to him. While living in Fergus he began delivering newspapers. He is quoted as saying "it was the longest route with the fewest customers." Having tried several other jobs during this time he found that working at St. Clair Rovang seemed to "suit" him the best, even acquiring several window design awards to his credit. This was the beginning of the legacy.
After serving time in the military, he came back to Fergus Falls and married the love of his life, Marie Olson, on November 18, 1950, becoming a member of another appreciated and appreciative family unit, the Olson's. "Chuck" and Marie began their married life on Mill Street in Fergus Falls and over the next ten years four children were born – Robert, Craig, Elizabeth, and Bonita. They were active in the choir at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and also taught Sunday School there.
After managing a startup St. Clair store in Albert Lea, MN for two years the Bullock family moved to Glenwood, MN. It was here that Chuck and his former Fergus Falls friend, Vic Johnson, had decided to buy the local St. Clair Irgens store changing the name to Johnson and Bullock Menswear. This store was open on Glenwood's main street from l968 until l996. Glenwood provided a wealth of opportunities for his civic interests and talents. He was an active member of the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce – serving once as its president. He also enjoyed his many years of singing with the Glenwood Lutheran Church Choir, Pope County Men's Chorus, and the Young at Heart Choir. He was also active with TRIAD, Glenwood and Beyond, Stephens Ministry, American Legion, Waterama, and the Lions Club.
Chuck started his involvement with Glenwood Waterama as the parade chairman, working up through the ranks to become the Admiral in l974. It was a special year for both him and his future daughter-in-law, Pam Erickson, who became the queen that same year. The Lions Club knew of Chuck's civic devotion as evidenced by his leadership roles as president and Zone Chairman as well as his secretarial skills spanning over 30 years.
Retirement didn't last long for Chuck. After closing the Johnson and Bullock store in l996, he began working part-time at Randy's Menswear in Alexandria, MN, for thirteen more years. He continued to be very active in the community and to that end became the recipient of the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce's first Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He continued to volunteer at the Senior Center and visited many friends at the Glenwood Retirement home.
When his wife, Marie, passed in 2001, Chuck kept busy with his many involvements. When keeping up the family home became too much for him he gracefully transitioned to Parkview Court continuing his many friendships. Together with his special companion of many years, Ardis Stone, he enjoyed being out and being involved. In the fall of 2015, Chuck moved to the Glenwood Retirement Home, a convenient move – just down the hall from his apartment at Parkview Court. It was here that he recuperated, interacted with his many friends, and participated in the Home's many activities.
He leaves behind the evidences of an exemplary life well lived, one built on courage and endurance. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Marion and Mable Bullock; his wife of 51 years, Marie Bullock; and a grandson, Matthew Chan.
He is survived by: 2 sons - Robert (Mary) Bullock of St Cloud, MN, and Craig (Pam) Bullock of Concord, NC; 2 daughters -Elizabeth (Ken) Chan of Glenwood, MN, and Bonita (Rick) Carlson of Chisago City, MN; 8 grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren, 17 step-great great grandchildren, and 1 step great-great-grandchild; adopted brother, Jack Wheeler; and special friend, Ardis Stone.
Also coming to the family's awareness is a host of new-found relatives discovered through extensive genealogy work done by his daughter, Bonita. His birth mother, Edythe Helen Swan and his birth father, Henry Benjamin Wigen, were both from the Mankato area. While these discoveries brought no biological siblings for Chuck they hold a vast opportunity for new connections through the extended family.
