Donald "Bud" Hoven, age 89 of Glenwood, died Sunday, May 3, 2015 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood.  A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 7th at 1:30 p.m. at Glenwood Lutheran Church.  Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and will continue on Thursday from 12:30 until the service at the church.  Inurnment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Donald "Bud" Hoven, son of Otto and Bernice Best Hoven, was born March 22, 1926 in Benson, MN. He went to school in Benson, and enlisted in the army, where he served in Europe during World War II. Upon Bud's return from military service, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Berg on September 1, 1946. For the next 68 years, Sylvia and Bud made their home in Glenwood. Bud worked for the Pope County Highway Department. He was a member of the Glenwood Legion, the VFW, Glenwood Jaycees, the Glenwood Lutheran Church, and was a retired chief of the Glenwood Fire Department. Bud and Sylvia enjoyed traveling and camping together. The grandkids were assured pony blanket pancakes and a game of Aggravation if they went camping with Grandma and Grandpa. Bud was a skilled carpenter, mechanic, and woodworker. His family has many treasured carved duck decoys, and others learned the trade from him. He always carried "mosquito houses" or toothpick holders in his pocket that he crafted by the 100s, so all could enjoy a part of his passion for wood. He also loved the great outdoors, which included hunting, fishing, gardening, and working on the family property on Lake Pelican, where he enjoyed cutting and splitting wood, with the help of his tractor, "Gus". Bud recently celebrated his 89th birthday and it was a wonderful celebration, with many of his family present. He died at the Glenwood Retirement Village, where he was a resident. He is survived by a daughter, Marlene (Wayne) Chan of Lowry; a son, Brad (Debbie) Hoven of Alexandria; 5 grandchildren, John (Melissa) Hoven, Sandra (Brad) Munson, Jenny Hoven, Nancy (Dean) Dufner, and Cindy (Brandon) Rechel; 8 great-grandchildren, Gabe, Atti and Linnea Hoven, Britney and Shawn Munson, Michael Dufner, Kaitlyn and Joseph Reichel; sister, Myrtrice Hanson of MO; as well as many nieces and nephews. His gentle demeanor, his love for family, and his sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sylvia in August of 2014; and a brother, Garold Hoven.
