Donald Showalter, age 84 of Glenwood, died Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 3rd at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Visitation will be from 12:30 until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in West Lake Amelia Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Donald Earl Showalter, son of Roy and Agnes (Harder) Showalter, was born on August 10, 1933, in Walnut Grove, Meeker County, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near there along with his 6 siblings. In 1959, he moved to Starbuck, Minnesota, where he worked for a few years on a farm west of town. After that he worked for Arnie Skare at the Arnie's Gulf Service in Starbuck, for Harold Rippe Plumbing and Heating in Glenwood, and for Steinbring Ford in Glenwood. In 1962, Donald began working for the Pope County Highway Department where he remained employed until his retirement on October 1, 1991.
On June 20, 1963, Donald was united in marriage to Sharon Schluter in Glenwood, Minnesota. The two made their home in Glenwood, along the shoreline of Lake Minnewaska. They were best friends and very devoted to one another during their 54 years of marriage.
Donald enjoyed fishing Lake Minnewaska from his dock in the summer months and from his fish house in the winter. He was also an avid and skilled woodworker.
Donald died at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood on January 30, 2018. May his memory be blessed.
Donald is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Glenwood; two sisters, Norma Engebretson of Cyrus, and Jeanette Ellingson of Paynesville; a brother, James Showalter of Bloomington; a sister-in-law, Margaret Egge of Breckenridge; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Agnes Showalter; a sister, Ida Pooch; and two brothers, Johnny and Douglas Showalter.
