Doris M. Cook, age 93 of Glenwood, died Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the Glenwood Retirement Village. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 9th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood with Father Joe Vandeberg officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with Parish Prayers at 7 pm at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in the Grove Lake Cemetery in Grove Lake, Minnesota. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Doris M. Cook, the daughter of Adolf Callihoo and Louise M. Belrose, was born November 5, 1921 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She grew up in Edmonton and attended St. Alberts Catholic Church and School.
After Catholic school, Doris was employed at a Canadian meat packing plant and an Edmonton bakery for 7 years. While working, she met Harlen Cook who was stationed in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with the Army Air Corp. She was united in marriage to Harlen J. Cook on September 23, 1946 in Edmonton. The couple made their home on Harlen's family farm near Grove Lake, Minnesota. This marriage was blessed with three daughters, Ardith, Sheryl, and DeEtta. Harlen and Doris farmed until their retirement in 1986, and remained on the farm until 2010, when they moved to Glenwood. Doris and Harlen shared 64 years of marriage before Harlen passed away on May 13, 2011. Doris resided at Ridgewood Villa in Glenwood from 2010 until September of this year when she moved into the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood. She passed away there on October 4, 2015 at the age of 93 years.
Doris was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sedan until it closed and she joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood. She was an active member of the Christian Mothers, ladies aid and in the Church Choir in Sedan. She enjoyed knitting, playing board games, word puzzles, reading, baking, cooking, gardening and dancing. Doris was the number one cheerleader for her grandchildren from wrestling to basketball to baseball and hockey, she was always there cheering them on. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor, her strong work ethic, generous heart and spirit and strong Catholic faith.
She is survived by her daughters: Ardith Colvin of Glenwood, Sheryl (Will) Kocur of Ham Lake, MN, and DeEtta (Stephen) Fadness of Grove Lake, MN; grandchildren: John, Steven and Doug (Christy) Witkowski, Chad (special friend, Lori), Ryan (Michelle), Chris Fadness, and Jessica (Casey) Tangen; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Frank (Lois) Belrose of St. Paul, MN; and special nephews, Todd (Gianna), Carter (Margaret) and Tyler Belrose.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harlen; sons-in-law, Joseph Witkowski and Jimmie Colvin; and grandson, Timothy Witkowski.
