Obituary

Eileen I. Peka, age 97, of Glenwood, and formerly of Bertha and Wadena, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at the Glenwood Village Care Center. Eileen, daughter of James and Susan (Engeldinger) Burk was born on July 17, 1916, at Parkers Prairie, Minnesota.  She grew up in the Bertha area on a farm and attended grade school at St. Ann's Parochial School in Wadena, Minnesota, and graduated from Wadena High School, class of 1936. Her uncle, August Engeldinger, gave her a piano for her ninth birthday.  She was an accomplished pianist and taught private lessons during the years of 1936-1938 in the Burk home, and had numerous students.  She attended the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, for one year; and was employed at the Reed and Carlson store in Staples, Minnesota, for several years. She was united in marriage to George Peka on December 2, 1944, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bertha.  They made their home on the "Peka Family Farm" for nine years.  In 1954, Eileen and George acquired their own farm of 160 acres.  They operated this dairy farm until 1973, and relocated to "Shady Acres" outside of Wadena.  Eileen, a homemaker and mother, also worked part time at WATCO. She was an avid gardener, and maintained several vegetable gardens, numerous fruit trees, and cultivated flowers. In 1984, Eileen and George moved to the Glenwood Retirement Village where they enjoyed many years of retirement living, and traveling in the United States. Eileen is survived by her daughter, Mary S. Hill-Caldwell, and husband Bill of Clearwater, Florida.  She is preceded in death by her husband; George, her parents, James and Susan Burk, and three brothers, James, William and Marnon. She will be remembered for serving St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bertha as the organist, from 1942 to 1973.  She also was a member of the Holy Name Society and Christian Mothers.
