Eleanor Elizabeth Elwood, the daughter of Charles and Janie (Fowlds) Elwood, was born June 19, 1917 in Grove Lake Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She grew up in Grove Lake where she attended school.
In 1936, Eleanor was united in marriage to Lester Eckert. The couple made their home in Grove Lake and were blessed with three children: Donald, Lavina and Jane. Eleanor and Lester shared 41 years of marriage before Lester passed away September 17, 1977.
Along with being a mother and housewife, Eleanor was handy with a 4" paint brush. She painted many farm buildings, over 200 inside dwellings, and several business places, including both nursing homes in Glenwood, Glenwood senior center, Glenwood State Bank, Pope County Creamery and Sedan Town Hall. Eleanor said the most interesting and challenging was when she and her husband, Lester painted the Grove Lake Methodist Church. While putting on the final touches in the bell tower, she couldn't resist giving the rope to the bell tower a pull and having the bell ring; having it heard for miles around. She enjoyed every minute of painting and said it was very rewarding. Eleanor was a good cook and when she was younger, she cooked at the Grove Lake School for 6 ½ years. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
On October 7, 1986, Eleanor was united in marriage to Joseph Dorweiler. Eleanor and Joe made their home in Grove Lake. They shared 30 years of marriage. Eleanor and Joe enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Joe Dorweiler of Grove Lake; daughter, Lavina (Raymond Laverne) Erickson of Minneapolis; grandsons Greg (Angelina Tallaj) Erickson and Mike (Ann) Erickson; great grandson, Quincy Erickson; son-in-law, Derrance Peterson; step-children: Michelle (Clyde) Weitl, Lynda (Keith) Schirck and Tim (Karla) Dorweiler; a niece, and two nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Lester; an infant son, Donald Lee Eckert; daughter, Jane Peterson; brothers, Orlin and Howard Elwood; and half-sister, Hazel Laage.
