Betty Butler, the daughter of Fred and Minnie (Bentfield) Berg was born August 25, 1932 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. She attended and graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1950.
On June 7, 1952, Betty married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Jack Butler at St. Christopher's Church in North Las Vegas. The couple started their family in Las Vegas with the birth of their son Thomas. In 1954, Betty and Jack returned to Sauk Centre where David was born. The family moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota in 1956 where they welcomed the rest of their children to their family, Steven, Jeanne, Michael and Tricia. Along with being a devoted wife and mother, Betty was a Vanda Cosmetic Representative. She was our original fashionista as she would not leave the house without first putting on her lipstick and earrings – even if it was to just get the mail. During their time in East Grand Forks, the family established strong friendships with their Mero Court neighbors. These relationships continued even after the family moved to Glenwood, Minnesota in 1971.
While living in Glenwood, Betty worked at Hardware Hank and Rexall Drug which gave her the opportunity to meet numerous people throughout the community. Betty was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Sacred Heart Guild and Mission groups. She was a volunteer with Pope County Hospice and especially enjoyed being a companion to the patients. Betty and Jack traveled to a variety of places including Switzerland and Hong Kong.
In 1991, Betty and Jack started their retirement adventure when they purchased a motor home and traveled the United States. After 2 years, they bought a winter home in Mesa, AZ near friends. For the next 14 years, Betty and Jack spent their summers in Glenwood and their winters in Arizona as "snow birds", driving south every October to enjoy the sun, play golf and spend time with old friends. In 2007, Betty and Jack started living in their home on Pelican Lake year round. Betty and Jack shared 57 years of marriage before Jack passed away on April 11, 2010. Betty lived on Pelican Lake until 2011 when she moved into Glen Terrace townhomes. She resided in Ridgewood Villa since 2014, where she enjoyed bingo and daily coffee with the ladies.
Betty enjoyed ceramics, crossword puzzles, sewing, collecting spoons, knitting, making cookies and lefse with her daughters and granddaughters, playing cards, golfing, canning, and gardening. She especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her famous potato salad, knitted Butler ski sweaters and being able to make friends wherever she went.
Betty is survived by her children: Thomas Butler of Robbinsdale, MN, David (Mary) Butler of Carlos, MN, Steven (Ginny) Butler of Oakley, UT, Jeanne (Jim) Pearce of Ashland, WI, Michael (Virginia) Butler of Glenwood, MN, and Tricia (Kevin) Zehrer of Lino Lakes, MN; 13 grandchildren: Nicole and Beth Anne Butler; Jimmy, Johanna and Jack Pearce; Alex, Hayley, Christopher (Tiffany), Casey and Eleah Butler; Nathan, Jaimie and Kelley Zehrer; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Bittner; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jack Butler; brothers, Norbert, Robert "Bob", and Richard "Dick" Berg and a sister, Dorothy Udry.
