Eugene Charles Stauber, son of Josef and Rose (Sandhoff) Stauber, was born November 21, 1938 in Faribault, MN. Eugene was raised by his maternal aunt, Clara (Sandhoff-Blum) Westphall in Superior, WI and also lived with aunt and uncle Ernest and Alma Matthias of Richfield for a time. He graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 1955 and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served until his honorable discharge in 1957.
Following his military service, Eugene enrolled at the Dunwoody Institute where he completed the baking program due to his love of sweets. On April 11, 1959, Eugene was united in marriage to Mary Helen Pederson at Our Lady of the Lakes Church in Mound. Their marriage was blessed with five children: Byron, Elizabeth, Eugene, James and Ann. Eugene and Mary made their home in Minneapolis, Richfield, and Minnetonka before moving to Glenwood in 1996. Eugene had a long and rewarding career as a baker at Lund’s Bakery for over 30 years before an auto accident in 1993 forced him into an early retirement.
Eugene and Mary shared 54 years of marriage before Mary’s death in 2013. Eugene and Mary spent their last few years together in Cold Spring, MN. Eugene later returned to Glenwood, and then lived in Dassel for a short time. Eugene enjoyed conversation, storytelling, spending time outdoors watching “God’s little critters”, reading, collecting stamps, and listening to classical music. He loved spending time with his family and beloved pets. When visiting Gene, you were sure to be offered a sweet treat.
Eugene leaves behind three children, Elizabeth Stauber of Paynesville, Eugene (Jennifer) Stauber of Cokato, and Ann (Richard) Almquist of Parkers Prairie; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Susan Stauber of Palm Coast, FL; the Blum family consisting of Harlow Jr., Bob and Laurie, along with other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Josef and Rose Stauber; his wife, Mary; two sons, Byron and James; two sisters, Gladys Ley and Shirley Anne Surratt; and five brothers: Albert, James and Billy Stauber, Robert and Richard Schultz; and dear cousin, Harlow Blum Sr.
