Ferdella "Della" Geraldine Ostrander, lifelong resident of Glenwood MN, was born on September 20, 1926, to Frank and Gunda (Anderson) Chermak. She graduated from Glenwood High School in 1944 and married her high school sweetheart, Donald Wayne Ostrander, on July 5, 1947. The two were happily married for over 50 years. She lost the love of her life when he passed away in June of 1998.
Over the years, Della worked a few jobs outside the home, but her main job was being a wonderful, caring, loving mother to their five children. Della loved to play golf, and even though she didn't learn the game until she was in her 30's, she was club champion a couple of times. She also was a very good bowler and even went to nationals. The social part of these two activities created friends for life as she played both sports into her 80's. She belonged to 2 card clubs for over 60 years and truly cherished the relationships with these "best friends" from cards. Della loved to play bingo anywhere and at any time. Even if she was just winning a banana and a dime, she was so thrilled you would have thought she won a new car.
Della and Don served at the Lakeside Ballroom during the big band era and also danced with the clubs. They were both active in the Jaycees and served as presidents of the club and auxiliary the same year. They even kept a live bear cub in their basement until they got a new Jaycee member to sign up – how times have changed. They owned a bar in Glenwood called "The Pub" for seven years during the early 70's. Della figured out that the patron's would stay longer to eat her sugar cookies so making those became part of her routine. She was a great cook and loved making lefse with anyone who wanted to learn how. A favorite activity was going to all of her children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's sporting events. She was definitely their biggest cheerleader, which came easy since she was a cheerleader in high school.
Traveling with her family was a big part of Della's life. They converted a school bus in the late 60's and early 70's into a camper. It was colored dark blue and had a stove, bathroom and bunks in it. When Don retired in the mid-80's they purchased a motor-home and spent several winters in Arizona where they met more friends and enjoyed going to flea markets.
All moms are great and Ferdella Geraldine was no exception. She will be enormously missed every day. Her love of life spread very easily these last few years as she moved from her house to senior living. We all love you very much Mom.
Della died at the age of 88 at the Douglas County Hospital on Saturday afternoon, November 15, 2014 from complications that arose after a successful hip surgery.
She is survived by her five children: Debby (Phil) Hanson of Fridley, MN; Diane of Toppenish, WA; Cindy (Greg) Frischmon of Glenwood; Danny (Barb) of Glenwood and Donny (Cindy) of Glenwood; grandchildren: Lissa, Carly, Nikki, Kyle, Peter, Quinn, Spencer, Allie, Andrew, Austin and Ariel; great-grandchildren: Jacob, Jenna, Danielle and Sammy, and many special nieces and nephews.
