Fern Claussen, age 92, of Glenwood, MN, died Sunday, December 4, 2016, at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 10th at Glenwood United Parish with Pastor Laura Nordstrom officiating. Visitation will be Friday, December 9th from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery in Glenwood. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Fern Amelia Viola (Scheff) Claussen was born on November 25, 1924 to Charles and Mamie (Klusendorf) Scheff in rural Sherburn, Minnesota. She grew up with three siblings: Francis, Floyd, and Faira Mae. Fern graduated from Sherburn High School in 1942. She was united in marriage to Merle "Chris" Claussen in Sherburn on December 1, 1943. They made their home in Sherburn and were blessed with three children, Bonnie, Barb, and Tim. In 1959, the family moved to a farm in rural Glenwood. In 1995, Chris and Fern moved into town. They celebrated over 52 years of marriage.
During the WWII era, Fern was employed by Honeywell. While living in Sherburn in the 1950's she was a waitress at Smith's Café. In 1961, she started working at Glenwood Manufacturing Corporation. After that, she worked in the dietary department of the Glacial Ridge Hospital until her retirement in her mid-80's.
Fern was an active member of the Glenwood Methodist Church where she sang in the church choir. Later, she was actively involved in the Glenwood United Parish Church where she served on the council and was involved in the women's group. She enjoyed making fresh jam from the fruits of Chris' garden, baking bread from scratch, and cooking. She loved spending time with friends and family, and also hosting annual family Christmas gatherings at the farm. Many people enjoyed receiving Fern's birthday, get-well, anniversary and other types of greeting cards. Fern also enjoyed scrap-booking, sewing, making quilts and writing letters.
Fern is survived by her three children: Bonnie (Tim) Tjaden of Robbinsdale, Barb (Bruce) Iverson of Glenwood and Tim Claussen of Glenwood; 7 grandchildren: Jennifer (Mark) Tjaden, Joy (John) Ratajczyk, Jessica Tjaden, Holly (Steve) Iverson Hayden, Amy (Mike) Horn, Jeff Iverson and Blaize (Terri) Zimmerman; 9 great-grandchildren: Gavin, Miah, MacKenzie, Kayleigh, Megan, Carrie, Cody, Jadi and Ashton; sister, Faira Mae Loos of Sherburn; sister-in-law, Shirley Scheff of South St. Paul; special neighbors, Terri and Bruce Wagner; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Chris in 1996; brothers, Francis and Floyd Scheff and daughter-in-law, Nancy Zimmerman.
