George Paul Tauber, son of James and Elizabeth (Steinbauer) Tauber, was born on February 10, 1918, in Lidgerwood, ND.   The third of nine children, he moved with his family to Minnesota at the age of 5 and grew up on a farm near Glenwood, where he attended school.  As a young man, George was employed by Lyslo Trucking.  On February 5, 1942, just 5 days before his 24th birthday, George entered the United States Army where he served as a member of Anti-Tank Company, 272 D Infantry, 69th Infantry Division.  While home on leave, he married Edna Birney at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on September 21, 1943.  On June 6, 1944, which later became known as D-Day, he was among those who landed and fought on Omaha Beach.  He was honorably discharged on October 1, 1945.  Upon his return from the service, he and Edna made their home in Glenwood and their union was blessed with four children, John, Cheryl, Steve and Liz. After his military service ended, George returned to work as a trucker, first working for Dyrstad Trucking and later purchasing the company and operating it with Edna as Tauber Trucking.  In 1977, they sold the business and George went to work for Glenwood Ag Services selling seed and delivering fuel. George was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church, where he was a trustee for many years and served as an usher until the age of 90.  George was a member of the Pope County Fair Board, the Glenwood Shipping Association and he volunteered at Hearts and Hands Food Shelf of Pope County.  He enjoyed Minnesota Twins baseball, wintering in Texas with Edna, visiting with people and gardening. George had a gentle and kind demeanor and a positive attitude.  He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather that lived by the mottos, "The Lord is with me every step of the way" and "We'll take what the Lord gives us". George moved to Parkview Court in 2009 to be near Edna, who had suffered a stroke.  Edna died on September 3, 2012.  George became a resident at Glenwood Retirement Village in July of 2013.  He died on August 21, 2014, at Glacial Ridge Hospital, having lived to the age of 96 years.  Blessed be his memory. George is survived by a son, John (Barb) Tauber of Wheaton, MN; two daughters, Cheryl (John) Runchey of St. Paul, MN, and Liz (Doug) Toussaint of Wahpeton, ND; 12 grandchildren, Sherrie, Michelle, Michael, Christopher, Andrew, Paul, Roxanne, Ben, Allison, Nick, Laura and Brad; 20 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Kaitlin, Anna, Ellissa, Cole, Braedon, Drew, Claire, Emilia, Matthew, Natalie, Solomon, Samuel, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Ashley, Atalie, Alaric, Caiden and Aubree; a sister, Helen Bahlmann of Lowry;  two brothers, Eugene (Sharon) Tauber of Glenwood and James Tauber of Nelson; a brother-in-law, Art Berg; a sister-in-law, Agatha Tauber , as well as many nieces and nephews.
