Gerald E. Rau, age 88, of Glenwood, MN, died Sunday, September 15, 2013 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20th at St. John's Lutheran Church in Villard with Pastor Joshua Heimbuck officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in West Lake Amelia Cemetery. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Gerald Ernest Rau, the son of Ernest and Anna (Giese) Rau, was born October 16, 1924 in Holloway, Minnesota. He grew up on a farm near Holloway where he attended school. He graduated from Holloway High School. Gerald furthered his education at Granite Falls Vocational School in Granite Falls, Minnesota.
On September 6, 1946, Gerald was united in marriage to Lorraine Tofte at Louisburg Lutheran Church in Louisburg, Minnesota. The couple first made their home on a farm near Holloway then moved to Appleton, MN then Ortonville, MN before settling in Glenwood in 1966. Gerald farmed and had various jobs while living in Appleton and Ortonville. After moving to Glenwood, Gerald was employed with the Minnesota State Highway Department for 29 years.
Gerald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He loved to do drawing of animals and people's faces, and was good at it. He also enjoyed watching sports on TV, collecting baseball caps and working on crossword puzzles. Gerald will be remembered for his great love for his family and his very sharp mind up until he passed away. Gerald died peacefully, September 15, 2013 at his home in Glenwood.
He is survived by his children, Marilyn (Ray) Sotebeer of Buffalo, MN, Geraldine Whittemore of Glenwood, MN, Phyllis (Steve) Sauer of Fargo, ND, Mark (Debra) Rau of Alexandria and Mary (Walt) Greene of Glenwood, MN; grandchildren, Heather, John, Jenny, Sara, Justin, Matthew and Brittany; great-grandchildren, Michael, Braden, Paige, Ethan, Aiden, Adesyn and Holly; sister, Jeanette Ehrp; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Gerald is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 61 years, Lorraine Rau; brothers, Milton and Merlin Rau; sister in infancy, Lorna Mae Rau; and brother-in-law, Gerald Ehrp.
