Obituary

Gloria Heieie, age 77, of Glenwood, MN, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at the Glenwood Village Care Center.  Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, December 13th, at Glenwood Lutheran Church.  Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 PM until 7 PM and will resume on Saturday at the church, beginning at 1:00 PM.  Interment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood. Gloria Elaine (Getchell) Heieie was born in Kensington, MN, on November 25th, 1937, to Ella (Gunderson) and Harold Getchell.  As a child, she lived both in Kensington and on a farm outside of Glenwood.  She attended Kensington Methodist Church as a child and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1956.  After high school, Gloria worked at the Lakeside Ballroom where she would eventually meet the love of her life.  Gloria married Ralph Heieie on June 15, 1957, at Glenwood Lutheran Church. They lived for a short while in Glenwood before moving to Brooten in 1958, where she and Ralph owned and operated the "Hi-I Lanes" bowling alley.  They returned to Glenwood in 1963.  In 1970, they moved to Faribault, where they lived for 5 years, returning permanently to Glenwood in 1975. She was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church and was active in the Altar Guild, GLCW and the Church Choir. Growing up, Gloria was involved in the 4-H and played clarinet in the High School band.  She had a very creative nature and took up hobbies that included sewing, knitting, arts and crafts and (of course) baking.  As an adult, she enjoyed singing in the church choir, sewing, knitting, canning, baking, playing cards, bowling, golf and travelling.   Most of those things she did with her good friends who were very dear to her.  She enjoyed her occasional trips to the Casino to play the nickel slots as well.  Gloria's greatest joy, however, was spending time with family.  Countless hours were devoted to watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in whatever activity they were involved in.  She attended numerous sporting events, band and choir concerts, proms, showers, baptisms, confirmations, graduations, weddings and more.  If she could be there, she was. Through the years, Gloria worked in various jobs at Sears, Culligan Water, Johnson & Bullock and Glenwood State Bank.  She was also an entrepreneur, selling her Tri-Chem creations throughout the country in the 1970's and eventually started  her own business, "Cakes by Gloria", becoming the face of cakes to Glenwood and the surrounding area for many years. Gloria is survived by her husband Ralph; daughters Deb Myrom, Glenwood and Barb Rosa (Ruben), Maple Grove, sons Dennis Heieie (Lynn), Apple Valley, Brian Heieie (Lisa), Glenwood and Erik Heieie (Jen), Albertville; 19 grandchildren – Kyle (Kristeen),  Markyn, Taylor and Nolan Myrom, Andy and Katie Heieie, Patia (Lance) Jensen, Amanda (Pete) Watt, Savannah (Karl) Hoium, Brianna and Mariah Heieie, Carlos and Annika Rosa, and Ian, Erika, Isaac, Haylee, Isaiah and Bella Heieie; 9 great-grandchildren – Jordan, Traxton, Autumn, Noah, Kendall, Mike, Kelly, Emma and Amina; sister Marian Bergner (Richard), Spring Hill, FL, sister-in-law Roselyn Getchell, Maplewood and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Gloria was preceded in death by her grandparents, who she loved dearly, Art and Hilda Gunderson, mother Ella Navratil, step-father Louis Navratil, father Harold Getchell, sister Shirley Johnson, brothers David and Dwight Getchell, son-in-law  Gary Myrom, great-granddaughter Kyla Neumann and great-grandsons Eli and Porter Jensen. Gloria will always be remembered by many as "the cake lady".  She will also be remembered for her love of life and for the always present love that she showed to her family and friends.   We are all better human beings for having had Gloria in our lives.
