Gloria Marie Schreier was born on April 18th 1936 to Martin Schreier and Mary Veronica (Donahue) Schreier in Sisseton, SD. She grew up riding horses bareback and attended the country school that was at the end of her driveway. Her spark for life was lit at a young age.
She met Duck Callen at a dance and formally married Donald Joseph Callen on August 19th, 1953 at St. John's Catholic Church in Veblen, SD. They made a home in St. Paul, MN and always have been best friends and companions. Donald once wrote Glory Bee a note that said, "From life's bramble bush I picked a rose". They were a fun couple, loved each other and enjoyed the outdoors. Glory Bee was a "crack shot" and achieved many awards for her skill in archery and firearms.
Glory Bee and Duck moved to Glenwood in 1961 and built a beautiful home on an archery course where they raised 5 children and hosted many wonderful events for family and friends. Glory Bee worked as a bookkeeper at Callen's Radio and TV, as a cashier at what is now Tom's grocery store in Glenwood, and was a cook at both Glacial Ridge Hospital and The Villa. She enjoyed being involved in the Glenwood community. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church where she ushered and was a Eucharistic Minister for many years. She was a founding member of Our Lady Mission and was a member of the Glenwood Jaycees.
Glory Bee loved her family and friends as well as going to daily mass, walking, gardening, Sunday drives, playing cards, line dancing, the color red, hunting, and her faith. She fought to survive cancer and was an uplifting example for many people. She believed in miracles and spread hope by being herself, Glory Bee. She will be remembered by the love-filled traditions she created including: being an Easter Bunny, Yahoo pancakes, O'Callen bars, rosary making, being Tiger Lilly the clown, Carmex, fire-balls, lemon drops, root beer floats, smiley-face suns, story sharing, and walks through the woods. She had a special touch for making people feel extra special. These things will never die, but live through us for generations to come.
By knowing Glory Bee we have become better people. We have been taught how to live life fully, to trust God's plan, to turn our frown upside down, to believe in miracles, to have a sense of humor, and to put a little spunk in all that we do.
She is survived by her children: Judy (Ray) Olson-Degner, Appleton, WI; Robin Grundman, Farmington, MN; Timothy Callen, Glenwood, MN; Scott (Denise) Callen, Hugo, MN; and Marty (Jeanne) Callen, Oshkosh, WI; her sister Lavonne (Leroy) Hellwig, Sisseton, SD; brothers Jerry (Mary Ann) Schreier, Kettle Falls, WA; Vernon Fossum, Phillipines; brothers-in-law Elvyn Hansen, Pierre, SD; Verlyn (Carolyn) Callen, Hearne, TX; and Roland (Marion) Callen, Glenwood, MN; her grandchildren: Christopher, Chad (Sherrie), Cherise, Chelsea, Nicole (Jim), Jenelle, Rachel, Maria (Jordan), Jacob, Shawn, Holly, Tony, Adam (Maria), Andy, Austin and Megan, Ryan, and Jake. She was blessed with great grand-children, nephews, nieces and godchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband and rock Donald Callen, her father Martin, her mother Mary Veronica, step-father Melvyn Fossum, sisters Darlene (Schreier) Hansen and Bonnie Schreier, sister-in-law Elaine (Callen) Moen and brother-in-law Lloyd Moen, nephews Dennis and Jim Moen, grandson Luke Grundman, and godson Nick Rasmusson.
