Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, May 23 rd at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church, rural Lowry, with Fr. James Statz officiating. Visitation will be at the church, one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in St. John Nepomuk Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Helen Elizabeth Dynda, daughter of John and Barbara (Koubsky) Dynda, was born on June 2, 1921, in Lake Mary Township, Douglas County, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm and attended District 13 County School in Lake Mary through the 8 th grade.
Helen married Lawrence Landa on October 2, 1939, at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in rural Lowry. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Allen, Barbara, and Judith. They farmed on the Landa family farm in Reno Township until they retired in 1980 and moved to Lowry.
On the farm Helen always kept a large vegetable garden including strawberries and raspberries, along with an apple orchard. She also raised ducks and chickens, which she "dressed out" and sold. She always did a lot of baking, cooking and canned the produce from the gardens. Apple pies and kolaches were two of her specialties. When the children were in 4-H, Helen volunteered and helped with the 4-H group. She was also involved in the St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in the Ladies Guild, mission circles, choir, and a reader at Sunday mass. After retiring from farming, Helen worked in Glenwood at the hospital as a cook. In Lowry she was involved with the Lowry Homemakers, Lowry Mission Circle (she sewed many, many children's outfits each winter), Senior Citizens Group, Craft Ladies, and she served in Glenwood as a Reader for the Senior Group. She was honored to be named the 2008 Lowry Lions "Citizen of the Year" and to represent the Glenwood Village Care Center as royalty in the Waterama Grande Day Parade.
Helen is survived by her three children and their spouses, Allen (Janis) Landa of Sioux Falls, SD, Barbara (Kenny) Denhardt of Eden Prairie, MN, and Judith (Denny) Sager of Bloomington, MN; seven grandchildren, Todd (Jean) Landa, Wade and Megan Landa, Bailey (Erik) Fossum, Stephanie O'Keefe, Carrie (Ryan) Clark, and Jodi Sager; four great-grandchildren, Svea Landa, Taylor, Katie, and Ashley Clark; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence in 2006, two sisters, Lillian Brezina and Mayme Engelbrecht; and a grandson-in-law, Michael O'Keefe.
