Obituary

Herbert Reed, age 92, of Brooten, MN, died Thursday, August 6, 2015, at Lakewood Care Center in Staples, MN.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9 th , at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home Chapel in Brooten, with Pastor Bryant Kaden officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home in Brooten, and will resume on Monday, one hour prior to the service.  Interment will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Brooten.  Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Brooten.

Herbert Alfred Reed, the son of Veronica (Schubert) and James William Reed, was born June 7, 1923 in Glenwood, MN.  He grew up on a farm near Glenwood and attended country school.  As a young man, Herbert entered the United States Army and served his country during WWII.  He was united in marriage to Dorothea Gerlach on June 29, 1952.  The couple made their home in Brooten.

Despite being classified as a disabled Veteran, Herbert worked on the pipeline in Minneapolis, as a machinist, and he farmed. He and Dorothea also owned the Phillips 66 station and Hiway Café in Brooten.  Following Dorothea's death in 2006, Herbert continued living in their home in Brooten for several more years. In 2013, he moved to Brainerd to live with his daughter, Crystal. Following an attack of diverticulitis, he moved to the Lakewood Health Care Center in Staples.

Herbert was a member of the Brooten American Legion and Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten. He enjoyed puzzles, fixing lawnmowers and playing the accordion. Herbert had kind, blue eyes and a    generous spirit. He died on Thursday, August 6, 2015, at the Lakewood Care Center in Staples, MN, having lived to the age of 92 years.

Herbert is survived by his 3 children, Debra (Mark) Nepsund of Brooten, Jeffrey (Sally) Reed of New London, MN, and Crystal (Deb) Reed of Brainerd, MN; as well as 6 grandchildren, Jenica, Karri, Kimberly, Kristian, Chad, and Veronica; 8 great-grandchildren, Jason, Nichollas, Wyatt, Kiana, Easton, Logan, Jezmyn, Rhyannon, Keira ; and one sister, Eldoris Bye of Kensington, MN; as well as April, an honorary daughter he adopted at the nursing home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea in 2006; 7 adult siblings, Harold, Howard, Fern Rausch, Mabel Carlson, Ruby   Pehan, Hazel Midtun, and Esther Thompson; as well as 2 sisters in infancy, Edith and Veronica Reed.
