Obituary

Irene Ask, age 85, of Glenwood, MN, died Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at Parkview Court in Glenwood.  Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, November 11th, at Glenwood Lutheran Church, with Rev. Randy Chrissis officiating.  Visitation will be from 4 - 6 P.M. on Sunday at the funeral home and from 10 to 11 on Monday at the church.  Inurnment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood. Olga Irene Ask was born on Oct. 25, 1928 to Oliver and Inga (Thingelstad) Rice of Pine Creek, MN. She was baptized on Nov. 25th by Rev. Berge Olson.  Sponsors were Elsie Rice and Carl Thingelstad.  She was confirmed on Sep. 6, 1942.  She completed eighth grade at Groveside Elementary School in 1941, and graduated from Roseau High School in 1945.  That was followed by two years of study at Concordia College, Moorhead, MN.  This is where she met her husband-to-be, Francis Ask.  They were united in marriage on Oct. 25, 1948 at Pine Creek Lutheran Church near Roseau. Francis and Irene were blessed with four children: David, Lyle, Philip and Melanie.  They lived at various locations in the state, as dictated by Francis' work-Bagley, Park Rapids, Brainerd, and Glenwood (since 1956).  Irene's hobbies included hand crafts such as knitting and crocheting, sewing clothing (especially when the children were in school), and had a special fondness for preparing holiday meals for her family.  She was happy to be a wife and homemaker and considered it to be a full time profession.  When the children were grown, she enrolled at Alexandria Technical College and earned an Associate Degree in Accounting. She later opened her own business known as "Ask Irene", retiring in 2003.  Irene was active in her church, serving on various committees, boards and offices, including being the first woman president of Glenwood Lutheran Church. Upon retiring, she embarked on a new hobby of researching and documenting her ancestors' lineage.  It was a rewarding experience and resulted in two trips to Norway to meet some of those relatives.  Irene passed away peacefully at home on November 6, 2013. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Melanie, all of her aunts and uncles, and two brothers, Roy and Stanley. She is survived by her husband Francis, son David and wife Barbara of Glenwood, MN, son Lyle and wife Jean from Gettysburg, PA, son Philip and wife Bonnie of Morris, MN, grandchildren Andrew Ask and wife Jenni and their children, Ben, Maggie and Emma of Grantham, NH, Kirsten Mickelsen and husband Victor and their children Brennan and Ethan of Nashville, TN, David Ask Jr. and wife Lisa and their children Parker and Kate of Hendersonville, TN, Matthew Ask and wife Kelly and their children Carter and Kellan of Fargo, ND, Corey Ask and wife Virginia and their son Jason of Shreveport, LA, granddaughter Christina Rogel and husband Joe and daughter Ingrid of Denver, CO; sisters, Lorraine Dye of Anoka, Evelyn Wold of Moorhead, Kathleen Dahl of Elk River, Margy Anderson of Bemidji, and Delphine Ode of Crookston; brother, Dwight Rice of St. Paul; along with numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
