Janice C. Scheflo, age 89 of Hamel, formerly Kensington, died Monday, July 20, 2026 at Covenant Living in Golden Valley, Minnesota. A visitation celebrating Jan’s life will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. A private family inurnment will be held at the First Lutheran Cemetery in Kensington. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Janice “Jan” Christine Scheflo was born on May 30, 1937, in Reno Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She was the fourth and youngest daughter of Joseph and Christine (Benesh) Zavadil. Jan’s early years were spent on the family farm and she was a member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church. She attended country school District 21 in Reno Township through the sixth grade before continuing to Alexandria High School after her family moved to Alexandria. After graduating in 1955, Janice embarked on her first adventure by moving to Minneapolis with several high school friends. There she took a position at Cooper Petroleum, located on the seventh floor of the Foshay Tower - a role she recalled fondly as a wonderful experience that introduced her to city life and new friendships.

While living in Minneapolis, fate introduced Jan to Melford “Mel” Scheflo. Their connection quickly grew, and they were married on May 24, 1960, in Hoffman, Minnesota. Together, Jan and Mel built a life founded on mutual respect, shared joy, and a love for family. They made their home in Kensington where they raised their daughter, Michele. Jan and Mel enjoyed traveling, attending auctions in search of antiques, and especially cherished moments spent with their beloved grandchildren, Andrew and Emma.

After returning to rural Minnesota, Jan worked at Alexandria Telephone Company and the First State Bank in Kensington. Her professional journey culminated in a remarkable 38-year career at Eagle Bank in Glenwood. During her time at Eagle Bank, Jan became known for her reliability, professionalism, and the genuine care she showed to colleagues and customers; a legacy that lasted long after her retirement.

Family always remained at the center of Janice’s life. She is survived by her daughter Michele (Brandon) Stendal; grandchildren, Andrew (April) Stendal and Emma Stendal; great-granddogs Barley, Daisy, Hazel and Goose plus other relatives and friends.

Jan was preceded in death by her devoted husband Melford Scheflo and her sisters, Betty Skramstad, Gladys Skramstad, and Dorothy Bartos.
