Obituary

Joseph Hvezda, age 85 of rural Lowry, died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at his home surrounded by family.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 11th at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in rural Lowry.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment will be in the St. John Nepomuk Catholic Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Joseph Phillip Hvezda was born on July 11, 1928 on the family farm by Lowry, MN. He was united in marriage to Mary Pospisil Hvezda on September 30, 1952. Joe farmed all this life on the four-generation family farm on the west side of Lake Reno. Joe was a lifetime member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church of Lake Reno. With the family farm across the road from the church, Joe spent much time there and partook in many activities. As a young boy, he was a server, sang in the church choir, church council member, and took care of cemetery grave marking, and started the cemetery fund. Joe also served on the School Board, Lowry Creamery Board, and on the Reno Township Board as treasurer. He also enjoyed the 21 years the family owned and operated the boat landing and campground on Lake Reno. Joe liked winter and summer fishing, camping with the family, bus tours, and fall thrashing shows with the camper. Researching family history was a hobby that both Joe and Mary enjoyed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pospisil Hvezda, and his parents Joseph Henry and Mary (Chan) Hvezda. Joe is survived by his children, Steven (Kathy Duvall) of Lowry, Lawrence (Jeanne) of Lowry, Roger (Debbie) of Alexandria, Keith (Brenda) of Lowry, Dale (Cheryl) of Alexandria, and Jolene Doherty (Shawn) of Holmes City, 18 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
