Julia Zgoda, age 95, of Glenwood, MN, died on Friday, May 9, 2014, at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 P.M. (Noon) on Thursday, May 15th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood, with Father Michael Wolfbauer officiating. Visitation will be at the church, beginning at 11:00 A.M. Christian Mothers will pray the Rosary prior to the service. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenwood. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Julia Rosetta Zgoda, daughter of Ingvald and Mary (Flaskerud) Alsaker, was born on November 14, 1918, in Brooten, MN. She grew up on a farm near Brooten and attended the Lutheran church. She was united in marriage to Hayward Simonson and the two made their home in Hamberg, ND. Their marriage was blessed with 3 daughters, Ramona, Ilona and Shirley. Julia and Hayward eventually divorced and Julia moved to Glenwood. It was there that she met and married Clarence Zgoda and became a member of the Catholic Church. In her later years she lived in Lowry for a short time, to be near her daughter, Ilona. Following Ilona's death Julia moved back to Glenwood.
Julia loved to do crafts, bake and make lefse. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glenwood.
Julia is survived by one daughter, Ramona "Mona" Turner; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Alsaker of Glenwood; and 49 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ingvald and Mary Alsaker; her husband, Clarence Zgoda in 1978; two daughters, Ilona Carey in 2011 and Shirley Kotiranta in 2011; a grandson, Ronald Carey in 2013; a great-grandson, Lucas Nerlien in 1993; a great-granddaughter, Melissa Christianson; and 8 brothers and 3 sisters.
