Kenneth Dougherty, age 89 of Starbuck, died Friday, January 23, 2015, at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, January 28th at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck with Pastor Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Fron Lutheran Cemetery in rural Starbuck. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Kenneth Lesley Dougherty, the son of Lesley and Lousia (Tastove) Dougherty, was born April 22, 1925 in Hospers, Iowa. Ken was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony Church in Hospers, IA. He entered the United States Army Air Force on July 7, 1945. He served his country during WWII in the Pacific theater in Saipan and Guam. He was honorably discharged on January 11, 1947. Ken worked at a lumberyard and later with a building contractor in Sheldon, IA.
On July 3, 1945, Kenneth was united in marriage to Marilynn VanDyke. They made their home in Sheldon, IA and were blessed with three children, Patricia, Michael and Dixie.
In 1953, Ken moved to Glenwood where he was employed by Ogdahl Construction for over 30 years. He also worked construction on his own for several years.
Ken was united in marriage to Orlean Eliason on October 12, 1979. They made their home in Starbuck. Ken was a member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck and the Glenwood American Legion and VFW. He enjoyed roller skating, working with wood, bird watching, playing cards and traveling. He especially loved spending time with family and friends. Ken passed away Friday, January 23, 2015 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
Ken is survived by his wife of 35 years, Orlean Dougherty of Starbuck; children, Patricia (Jim) Ficke of Champlain, MN, Michael (Denise) Dougherty of Glenwood, and Dixie (Kenneth) Wersinger of Alexandria; grandchildren, Nathaniel Ficke, Luke (special friend, Lisa), Samuel (Nicole), Austin and Hunter Dougherty, Meagan (Justin) Paumen, Lisa (Patrick) Odens, Brandi (fiancé Nick Petermann) Wersinger and Ryan Wersinger; great-grandchildren, Braelyn and Chase Paumen, and Amelia, Maximos and Alena Dougherty; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard; four sisters, Evelyn, Helen, Margaret and Clara; ex-wife, Marilynn Torrens and former daughter-in-law, Melanie Ulmer.
