Lenore "Lennie"
May (Baukol) Rovelstad
May 4, 1917 — Jan 3, 2015
Lenora "Lennie" Baukol Rovelstad, age 97 of Vermillion, SD, died January 3, 2015, at the Care Center in Vermillion. A memorial graveside service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, July 6, 2015, at Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery, with Pastor Marshall Hahn officiating. Inurnment will follow the service. Local arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Lenora May Baukol was born to Harris and Anna Ronnei Baukol on May 4, 1917 on a farm south of Noonan, ND. Her family moved to Washington State but returned to Noonan when she was five years old. She attended Noonan Public School and graduated in 1935 as the High School Salutatorian. She attended St. Olaf Lutheran College in Northfield, MN for two years and then returned to North Dakota to finish her bachelor's degree at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.
At UND she pledged Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and met a Sigma Nu named Robert (Bob) Rovelstad. When they first met, there was some confusion concerning her name. Was it Lenora or Lenore? Bob settled this when he said that he would call her Lennie and that is how most people have known her since. Lennie graduated from UND in 1939 with a degree in Mathematics. After graduation she taught Math in Willow City and Wahpeton, ND, and Bemidji, MN. She was also called upon to teach Home Economics, Folk Dancing and Tumbling.
Bob and Lennie were married on May 30, 1942 in Noonan, ND. Bob had joined the Army and would serve as an Officer in the Army Air Forces, as a Judge Advocate. Lennie followed Bob to Pierre, SD and then Sioux City, IA, where Ann was born. Then she followed him to Brownsville, TX, where Sandra was born. When the war ended they returned to North Dakota, living in Fargo, Noonan, and Minot. After Ann and Sandy left home, Lennie served as a substitute teacher in the Minot School System.
Upon Bob's retirement from his position as President of Baukol-Noonan Coal Corporation, Lennie and Bob moved to a golfing resort in Rancho Viejo, TX, where they were active in community affairs along with golfing and swimming. They spent the summers relaxing in the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota. As their health began to deteriorate, they moved to a Senior Living Facility in Vermillion, SD, where they could be close to Ann. Bob died in 2008 and Lennie moved to the Sanford Vermillion Care Center a year later.
Lennie passed away on January 3, 2015 at the Care Center in Vermillion at the age of 97 years. Her parents, husband, brother Oliver (Pete) Baukol, sister Ruth Hahn, and son-in-law Harry Settles preceded her in death. She is survived by daughters Ann Settles and Sandra (David) Teigen, three grandsons, three granddaughters, ten great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
