Obituary

Maleta L. Barsness, age 93 of Glenwood, died Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood.  A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5th at Barsness Lutheran Church in rural Glenwood with Rev. Ginger Beck officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Inurnment will be in the Barsness Lutheran Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Maleta Louise Barsness, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Behle) Pestorious was born October 27, 1920 in Alden, Minnesota.  She was baptized and confirmed in Concordia Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.  Maleta attended grade and high school in Alden and graduated in 1939.  She then attended Mankato Business College.  Maleta worked at Wilson and Company in Albert Lea then moved to Minneapolis where she worked at Wallman Optical Co. While living in Minneapolis, Maleta met her future husband, Norris Barsness.  The couple was married on September 16, 1944.  Maleta and Norris made their home in Minneapolis, Litchfield, and Albert Lea before moving to the Glenwood area in 1949.  This marriage was blessed with two children. Maleta was employed as the Deputy Clerk of Court, appointed by Judge Gandrud in September of 1959, and served in this position until she retired in April of 1985.  She was a member of Barsness Lutheran Church where she was active with the women's auxiliary, secretary of the church council, secretary of the trust and memorial committee and taught Sunday School.  She also served as the treasurer for the Glenwood Retirement Village Auxiliary. She enjoyed making quilts, reading, entertaining family and friends, putting together puzzles, watching games shows and sports, especially the Minnesota Twins and traveling.  Maleta loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Maleta is survived by her children, Dale Barsness of Minneapolis and Dyann (Jim) Schumacher of Glenwood; grandchildren: Kimberly (Mark) Thometz, Jeffrey (Kerri) Barsness, Luke Schumacher, Alicia (Mike) Paul, Lindsay (Raji) Alowairdi, Tony Barsness (special friend Lauren), Michele Barsness (special friend, Brady) and Ashley (Brent) Lund; great-grandchildren, J.T., Zach, Mitch, Brittany, Trent, Brendan, Jared, Alayna, Landen and Nolan; sisters, Olga Rieber and Evelyn Walk of Owatonna, MN; brother-in-law, Marv Barsness of Scottsdale, AZ; and sister-in-law, Nellie Jane Masica of Mankato; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Norris in 1997; four brothers and two sisters.
