Obituary

Margaret E. Kettells, age 100, of Glenwood, died Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 7th at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

Margaret Ellen Kettells was born June 9, 1921 in Glenwood. She was the sixth and last child of Anton and Clara (Rosten) Branae. She attended school in Glenwood and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1939.

Margaret was united in marriage to Charles Kettells in 1939. They made their home and raised their family in Glenwood. The couple was blessed with three children: Lois, Steve and Margie. Margaret was the secretary and manager of the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce for 25 years. She was influential in nurturing the annual Waterama celebration, which is still the main summer celebration for the City. After her time at the Chamber, Margaret was employed at the Pope County Museum. She worked at the museum for over 25 years. Margaret was very proud of her 100% Norwegian heritage and a proud member of the Sons of Norway, volunteering at one time or another for every office in the organization. She was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and served on several committees. She was a talented seamstress making clothing for her and her children. She knit mittens for the mitten tree at church along with making afghans and crochet crafts. Margaret was a long time blood donor, donating gallons of blood over the years. She loved the Minnesota Twins and was a huge fan. She especially loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Lois Kettells of Glenwood; son, Steve (Judy)  Kettells of Nags Head, North Carolina; seven grandchildren: Steve (Sarah) Wesen, Tom Kettells, Gina Singleton, Karen Kettells, Julie (Mike) Gerstein, Jill (Anthony) DiGiovannie, and Michael Satter; 13 great-grandchildren: Tally Wesen, Cassidee, Rylan and Shayna Wesen, Jackson and Adam Singleton, Ryan, Jacob, Ben and Sophia Gerstein, Katie and Jack DiGovannie, and Margaret Satter; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles in 1978; daughter, Margie Satter; grandson, Greg Wesen; two sisters, Caroline Olander and Elsie Ellingson; and three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Conrad Branae.
