Marjorie Bogie, age 98 of Glenwood, died Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Marjorie Violet Neumann Bogie, the daughter of Louina (Schumacher) and Paul Neumann, was born on July 21, 1917, on a farm in Leven Township in Pope County, Minnesota. She spent her formative years at this location until she graduated from Villard High School as Class Historian on May 31, 1935 at the age of 17. She attended and was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Villard.
She attended and graduated from Minneapolis School of Business and with a degree in Business that brought her back to Glenwood, and the Pope County Courthouse and a job to work in the Welfare Department.
It was in Glenwood that she met her husband, David Bogie. Their first date was going fishing. This set the pace. The two were married on May 26, 1939. The next years were an adventure in nature and traveling. Her favorite retreat was Montana and the mountains. They called to her she often said . . . and She called them "my mountains". Another place was Texas and Alamo in the Valley and later Fulton on the Gulf, were frequent destinations where she and David enjoyed wonderful times and escaped the Minnesota winters. They welcomed family to join them, even if only for a short break from the northern storms. Side trips to Arkansas Refuge and other nature places and historical places also kept them busy and happy.
A favorite activity throughout Marjorie's life was rock hounding in Montana, especially for the garnets in the Ruby Reservoir. Trips to Thunder Bay, Ontario, brought large amethysts home for display.
Building the cabin on Lake Villard in 1957 also provided her with a retreat to nature, even more so after Dave passed. She often drove out alone to just muse by the lake and, in her later years when driving became difficult, family provided the transportation. As beautiful as Lake Villard was, the mountains would call them as the summer waned and it was time to go trout fishing and camping out West. For 15 years, Marjorie started packing every summer, soon after the 4th of July, to go to Montana. After Dave passed in 1991, it didn't take much arm-twisting to get her daughters and grandkids to travel back to the old vacation haunts so she could once again smell the mountain breeze in the Rockies. The mountains beckoned to her musical side as well, since she was an accomplished pianist and organist. One of her favorite sheet music pieces sang of the Rockies. Marjorie was very active in church and church activities at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran, Wisconsin Synod, in Glenwood. She was the organist for 25 years, playing first on a large old organ in the back and later on a new one in front. She much preferred the opportunity to belt out the old German hymns from the back.
Later in life, Marjorie was also a devoted volunteer at the Food Shelf in Glenwood. She was in her 80s when she left that work and received a certificate to honor her good work. She enjoyed helping others.
Marjorie was an exceptional cook and baker . . . to which her family would attest. Every family event was a venue for trying out a new recipe. Thankfully, she passed many on to family and her daughters, especially. A family favorite to the end was a cucumber dish. Marjorie gardened until she was 97 to make sure somebody had a crop of cucumbers.
Marjorie lived a full life with a large family and extended family being her greatest focus. She will be missed greatly. Over the past months she would say she "wanted to go home". She was tired, she said. She passed peacefully on Sunday morning, November 15, 2015, at Glacial Ridge Hospital. She is "home".
Marjorie is survived by her three daughters: Judy McDonough of Alexandra, MN, Bonnie (Jim) Raschke of Hastings, MN, Pat Anderson of Fergus Falls, MN; 8 grandchildren: Jeff McDonough of Hollywood CA, Julie Bjerkness of Eden Prairie, MN, Heidi Raschke of St Paul, MN, Karl Raschke of Mpls, MN, Anne McDonough of St Paul MN, Todd Anderson of Fergus Fall, MN, Mark McDonough of Coon Rapids, MN, and Jen Anderson of Fergus Falls, MN; as well great grandchildren, Eleanor and Iris Eason, Jade, Gavan and Jordan Anderson, Joey Jordan, Adam Isaac, Luke Anderson, and Roman Raschke. She is survived by sisters Eula Brynelson of Fergus Falls (Hawaii in the winter), and Ardella Andert of Alexandria; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who provided her with untold moments of fun and joy!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louina and Paul Neumann; her husband, David Bogie; her son-in-law, Paul (Buzz) Anderson; and 2 brothers-in-law, Ralph Brynelson and Warren Andert. She will be remembered for her generosity, her fun times with family and her kindness to many. Marjorie was all about family. And she cherished the traveling to other places, and especially to Montana, Texas, Canada, and Mexico. She liked to have family come and share. She loved Hawaii and her three trips there. She is on her final journey now, but we know she's enjoying that too . . . and this time with Dave by her side once again. Enjoy it Marge, Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma and Friend. You deserve it. Peace to you.
Thank you to Lorie (Charles), Tammie (Mark), Mike (Jeanne) and Tom (Linda) for all you did for her, especially in the 24 years since Dave's death.
