Raymond Schuhmacher age 86 of Portland, OR, formerly of Glenwood, MN, died March 24, 2014 in Portland, Oregon. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 5th at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Interment will be in the Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Raymond Herman Schuhmacher was born on September 14, 1927 in Glenwood, MN to Willie and Freda (Protingier) Schuhmacher.
Raymond entered the United States Army, serving during the Korean War where he earned the rank of Sargent. He met his wife Leona upon his return and married Leona Adeline Gylsen on August 27, 1955 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Reno, Nevada. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter Susanne.
Ray and Leona moved to Portland in 1956 after spending a year in Mt. Shasta, CA where he worked in the lumberyard. Raymond was employed as a Longshoreman in Oregon and retired in the late 1980's. Raymond was a dedicated member of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Portland, OR for 53 years. He was active in bible study classes and volunteered often in the church. His interests included gardening, farming, he was a handyman and loved animals.
Raymond is survived by his daughter Susanne Lynette Brittain and son-in-law Michael Brittain of Chandler, Arizona, cousin Norman Schuhmacher of Minnesota, granddaughter Megan Brittain of Chandler, Arizona and numerous relatives and friends.
A service was also held on Tuesday April 1, 2014 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Portland, Oregon. Memorials may be made to Megan Brittain, who will distribute to various charities that Raymond was associated with. Memorials may be made to Megan Brittain, 1957 N. Lexington Dr., Chandler, AZ 85224.
