Robert Gregory Mertens, age 69, of Villard died Friday, May 8, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by family. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Monday, May 11 at 11 a.m. at New Life Christian Church in Alexandria.  Visitation will be from 10 - 11 a.m. the day of the service at the church. Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home is assisting with these arrangements.

Robert Gregory Mertens was born to Ray and Grace (Majerus) Mertens on August 5, 1945 in Alexandria, MN. He attended grade school in Villard and graduated from Villard High in 1963. After high school Robert joined the National Guard Reserve. On April 21, 1965 Robert was united in marriage to Mary Ramey. The couple was blessed with two children. While making their home in Villard, Robert spent many years working at various jobs as a parts man, including working at Tank's in Villard. Later the couple started farming in the Villard and Osakis area and continued farming for several years until Robert's retirement. Robert and Mary retired on some acreage south of Villard.

Robert enjoyed restoring his 1950 Studebaker, which his dad had owned. He also loved working on his 1963, Red, Valiant convertible which was the same exact car Robert had as his first car. He also had a passion for Allis Chambers Tractors, vegetable gardening and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of 50 years; daughter, Ann (Nick) Meola; and son, Mark (Denise Chan); grandchildren, Nichole, Anthony, Shelby, Brittany; brother Richard (Carol) Mertens; including several nieces and nephews and other friends.
