Selma "Sally" Aslakson, age 97, of Starbuck, MN, died Monday, February 9, 2015, at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday at Glenwood Lutheran Church, with Rev. Krista Lee officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home in Glenwood and will resume on Friday morning at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Selma "Sally" Stenson Aslakson was born October 11, 1917 in Cyrus, Minnesota to Peter and Emma (Strommen) Stenson. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. The family moved to the Stenson family farm two miles south of Glenwood when she was four years old. She attended country school at District #40 and Glenwood High School. She belonged to Glenwood Lutheran Church where she was confirmed by Rev. Linnevold in 1932. She taught Sunday School at Glenwood Lutheran and East Zion Lutheran Church for several years. She was a longtime member of the VFW Auxiliary, serving as past president for two years in Shakopee and 11 years at Starbuck. She was also a member of the Starbuck American Legion Auxiliary. Sally worked as a saleswoman at a variety of stores along with being a waitress in supper clubs in Minneapolis and around Pope County. Sally actively volunteered and was the chairperson for 25 years for the March of Dimes in Pope County. She was briefly married to Lee Luckman in 1940.
In 1948, Sally was united in marriage to Norman "Bud" Aslakson. They made their home in Glenwood and in 1956, they moved to Shakopee. In 1963, they moved back to the Starbuck and Glenwood area living in both towns. Sally and Bud shared 50 years of marriage. Sally enjoyed reading, visiting her daughter's cabin on Lake Minnewaska, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Sally will be remembered as being a wonderful caregiver, taking care of three of her siblings before they died.
She is survived by her children, Sandy Cowen of Mesa AZ, Kurt (Jean) Aslakson of Belle Plaine, MN, Deborah (Robert) Kuusisto of Starbuck, and Kent Aslakson of Minneapolis and his special friend, Vicky Sawdon; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Gaynor Aslakson of Shakopee; sister-in-law, Marilyn Stenson of Glenwood; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Emma Stenson; husband, Norman Aslakson; son Gary Aslakson; and siblings, Cora Overstad, Pierce Stenson, Donald Stenson, and Ardell Hanson.
