Stanley Hawn, age 86 of Glenwood, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 17th at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be the Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Stanley Bang Hawn, the son of Hiram Wallace and Ella (Bang) Hawn, was born May 16, 1927 in Grove Lake Twp, Pope Co., MN. He was baptized at First Presbyterian Church, Sedan, MN and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Brooten, MN.
Stanley attended elementary school in Sedan and was a 1945 graduate of Glenwood High School. He was drafted by the Army in June 1945 and he enlisted in the regular army in October 1945. In January 1946, he went to Germany as a part of the Third Infantry Division. He served as an Honor Guard in the Tenth Field Artillery Unit for six months. In July 1946, he was assigned to the U. S. Constabulary in Germany. He served there as a mechanic and driver for the remainder of his two year enlistment.
Stanley married Audrey Torgerson on September 21, 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The two shared over 56 years of marriage before Audrey passed away June 12, 2008.
Stanley was a motor grader operator for forty years. He worked for the Pope County Highway Department, Central States, and Arcon. In April 2009, Stanley was chosen to be part of the Northern Valley Honor Flight from Grand Forks, ND to see the World War II Memorial in Washington, D. C. His daughter, Beverly, was his escort on the trip. After a stroke in February 2010, Stanley moved from his home in Glenwood to the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, Minnesota.
Stanley was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Glenwood Lutheran Church. Prior to his first stroke in 2006, Stanley was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trap shooter. He remained a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Pope County Pheasant Restoration, Minnewaska Lake Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Terrace Sportsman's Club. Stanley enjoyed casino trips, eating blueberry pizza at Pizza Ranch, and scanning the countryside for wildlife.
Stanley is survived by his daughter, Beverly, of Glenwood, sister, Eunice Holz, of St. Peter, MN, sister-in-law Sonja Hawn of Sedan, special friends Glenn Weispfenning of Fredonia, ND and the Rockensock Family of Blackduck, MN, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Audrey; 4 brothers, Lloyd, Ray, James, and Robert; his sister, Gladys Majerus; and a sister-in-law, Dora Hawn.
