Viola Mildred Kittelson, the daughter of Oscar and Emelia (Sandvig) Iverson, was born on April 7, 1911 at the family farm home on Scandinavian Lake. Viola was confirmed by Rev. Beito in Norwegian in 1925. She graduated from Glenwood High School in 1929 and from Glenwood Normal Training in 1930. She received her B.A. degree from St. Cloud State in 1962. Viola began her teaching career in 1930 in District 2 and retired from teaching in the Brooten Elementary School in 1976. Viola was a lifetime member of West Lake Johanna Lutheran Church of rural Brooten.
Viola Iverson married Walter Kittelson on May 5th, 1935. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Paul, Larry, Emelie, David, Ruth and Kathleen.
Vi taught Sunday School and held offices in the Ladies Aide. She belonged to Zetetic Study Club; the Brooten Education Association; the Lake Johanna Park Board; The Red Cross Bloodmobile; the Sons of Norway and was a 4-H leader. She was honored as Brooten's Teacher of the Year and WCCO's Good Neighbor Award.
Vi did quilting into her 90's, making quilts for her children's weddings and for her grandchildren along with quilting with the Ladies Aide ladies. She also crocheted many Christmas ornaments for her children and grandchildren. She loved to go dancing; golfing; playing cards; reading; and playing Scrabble with her sister, Harriet, and later with friends at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home. She loved summers at their home on Lake Scandi when her brothers and sister and families gathered weekends during the summer. The 4th of July was a big family reunion time for all the Iversons, Kittelsons and Ericksons.
Vi and Walter traveled extensively when she retired, visiting most of the 50 United States as well as abroad. They wintered in Arizona, California, Texas, but mostly in Florida.
Viola is survived by her sons, Paul (and Janice) Kittelson of Benson, Larry (and Linda) Kittelson of Starbuck, David Kittelson of Pearland,TX; and daughters, Emelie Sorenson of rural Brooten, Ruth (and Warren) Mitchell of Brooten, and Kathleen (and Don) Yates of Crofton, MD. She is survived by 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren.
