Violet Schlief, age 90 of Glenwood, died Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the Barrett Care Center in Barrett, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26 th at the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in West Lake Amelia Cemetery in rural Villard. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home.
Violet Frances Schlief, daughter of Louis Henry and Martha Marie (Ehler) Wegener, was born at home, on July 13, 1925, in Reynolds Twp., Todd County, MN. The 7th of 10 children, she was raised on a farm near Long Prairie, MN, where she attended rural school. Violet was employed at the Glenwood Hospital prior to her marriage to Alder Stanford Schlief on January 26, 1944. Alder was serving as a Merchant Marine in WWII at the time. Following his honorable discharge, the couple lived in South Haven, MN, before moving to Paynesville to purchase and operate the Standard Gas Station. The gas station was later sold, and in 1954, they purchased a farm near Glenwood, where they raised their four children and enjoyed many happy years. In 1991, Violet and Alder retired from farming and purchased a home in Glenwood, where they lived until 2000 when they both needed nursing home care. Alder died on January 2, 2006, just weeks shy of their 62 nd wedding anniversary.
Violet enjoyed embroidering and her flower gardens; geraniums and gladiolas were her favorite. In the winter she passed the time quilting with her wonderful friend and mentor, Geneva Norby.
Voilet died on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at the Barrett Care Center in Barrett, having lived to 90 years of age. Blessed be her memory.
Violet is survived by her daughter, Diana Schlief of Starbuck, MN, sons, Warren of Grass Valley, CA, and Douglas and his wife, Evelyn of Glenwood; seven grandchildren, Christie (Paul) Peterson, Tammie (Mark) Thompson, Kimmie (Patrick) Hornick, Nathan (Deb) Schlief, Jennifer (Peter) Bennett, David (Stacie) Schlief, and Daryl Schlief; 12 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Rachel, Aaron, Melissa, Devon, Nicholas, Austin, Jackson, Harleigh, Savannah, Natasha, and Blade; two sisters, Evelyn LeSuer and Elma Chandler; her sister-in-law, Barbara Wegener; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alder; her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Phil Benjamin; two brothers, Ralph and Albert; and five sisters, Sophia Koerlin, Rose Thompson, Clara Evenson, Inez Paetznick, and Alice Schlief.
