Virginia Jane Thomas, daughter of Roy and Bessie (Ellefson) Thomas, was born on February 11, 1922 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. When Virginia was a young girl her family moved to a farm near Cyrus, Minnesota, where she and her four siblings were raised. Virginia attended school in Cyrus through the 8th grade. As a teenager she worked as a domestic helper for various families in the area and was also employed at Pete's Grocery Store in Starbuck. She enjoyed going to dances and met her first husband, Milton Signalness, at a dance at Gene's Barn. The two were married on September 4, 1939 at Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, and made their home on Milton's family farm south of Starbuck. Their marriage was blessed with one son, Roger and two daughters, Shirley and Becky.
Virginia and Milton shared 35 years of marriage before he passed away in 1974. Following his death, she sold the farm and moved to Starbuck. It was at another dance where she met her second husband, Granville "Granny" Walburn, of Villard. The two were married on March 29, 1975, after which Virginia moved to Villard to live with Granny. The two shared 28 years of marriage before Granville's death on April 28, 2003.
After Granville's death, Virginia lived at Ridgewood Villa in Glenwood until 2008, when a serious back injury forced her to need additional care, at which time she became a resident at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. It was there that she passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2014, having lived to 92 years of age.
Virginia was a member of the Eastern Star. When she lived near Starbuck she was a member of Fron Lutheran Church, where she was active in the ladies aid and taught Sunday school for 28 years. Since her marriage to Granville in 1975, she has been a member of Villard United Methodist Church.
Virginia was a wonderful cook and baker, and was known especially for her homemade cinnamon rolls. When she lived on the farm she enjoyed tending the chickens and baby pigs. She was a talented, self-taught piano player and quite a dancer. She will be remembered for her kind and helpful nature and as a generous hostess.
Virginia is survived by her son, Roger, and his wife, Gloria Signalness of Lakeville, MN; her daughter, Becky and son-in-law, Steve Anderson of Westport, MN; 7 grandchildren, Dawn (Tony) Blaisdell, Shawn (Margaret), Kevin (Jody) and Wayne Signalness, David and Steven (Julie) Dengerud and Nancy Weston; 2 step-sons, Roger (Joan) Walburn and Allen Walburn, 3 step-grandchildren, Rachel Mattson, Michael (Jana) and David Anderson; as well as great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
