Wanda M. Haldorson, age 88 of Belgrade, formerly of Glenwood, died Thursday, October 6, 2016 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14 th at Glenwood Lutheran Church with Rev. Randy Chrissis officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Wanda Mae, the daughter of Bernard "Ben" and Elvina (Anderson) Leraas, was born on May 10 th , 1928 in Barrett, Minnesota. She was raised in Barrett with her seven siblings, and graduated from Barrett High School in 1946. As a young woman she moved to Glenwood, Minnesota and began working at the local electrical utility. She met her future husband, Erwin "Erv" Haldorson, at a Valentine's Day dance at the Lakeside Ballroom in 1947, and they were married on November 2 nd , 1952, in Barrett at the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Wanda and Erv made their home in Glenwood, where Erv operated the Haldorson Hardware Store with his brother, Harry, and Wanda worked at Northern States Power (NSP) Company, where she was honored as the NSP Citizen of the Year. She retired from NSP after 28 years of service. Wanda was very active in the community and in Glenwood Lutheran Church, serving on many committees and boards. After retirement, Wanda and Erv continued to make their home in Glenwood, and, for many years Wanda operated a needlework and sewing supply shop (The Silver Needle) out of their home on Lake Minnewaska.
Wanda was a skilled needle worker and an excellent cook. She was known for the high quality of her lefse. She was committed to her family, and her home was the site of many family gatherings and dinners, including a gathering of all of her siblings and their children in 1966.
Wanda is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lewis and Julia Haldorson, of Greenbank, Washington, and by numerous nieces, nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin, in 2005; her parents, Bernard and Elvina Leraas; four brothers Marvin, Ervin, Delmar, and Gordon, and three sisters Marcy Oswald, Phyllis Erickson, and Darlene Homuth.
